About this role
Managing a federal highway safety grant program requires someone who can balance oversight with collaboration. In this role, you would administer grants across multiple partner organizations—law enforcement agencies, universities, community groups, and vendors—conducting site visits and audits, supervising project directors, and ensuring compliance with federal requirements. You'd review applications, quarterly reports, and budgets to verify that funds are spent appropriately and that grantees meet their stated goals. Teaching grant management processes at annual orientation meetings and representing the Tennessee Highway Safety Office at conferences would round out your responsibilities.
The position calls for a bachelor's degree and three to five years of related experience, along with strong communication and organizational skills. You'll need proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, for budget analysis and independent work. A valid Tennessee driver's license is required, and you must be authorized to work in the US without visa sponsorship. Prior experience in highway safety program administration is preferred but not required; the university will consider equivalent combinations of education and experience. Working hybrid from Nashville, you'd be part of the Center for Transportation Research within UT Knoxville's engineering college, collaborating with state transportation and safety agencies across Tennessee.
