About this role
Waymo is establishing its first Field Safety Engineer position in Germany, a role that bridges autonomous vehicle technology with local regulatory oversight. You would be the primary technical liaison between Waymo and German automotive and traffic safety regulators, responsible for managing post-deployment safety issues specific to the company's operations in Bavaria. This involves both proactive engagement with regulatory authorities and reactive incident response—you'll work with Waymo's Policy and Legal teams in Munich while coordinating with the Field Safety group in California to identify, analyze, and prioritize safety concerns that affect the German market.
The role demands deep expertise in automotive engineering or transportation systems, backed by at least ten years of technical experience. Critically, you need established knowledge of Germany's regulatory framework and prior experience working with German automotive regulators. You'll need to balance technical problem-solving with strong communication skills, moving fluidly between engineering teams, legal counsel, operations, and government officials. The position includes participation in a 24/7 on-call safety rotation and occasional evening availability to sync with the US-based team.
This is suited to an engineer with a solid technical foundation (bachelor's degree minimum, ideally advanced), regulatory navigation experience in Germany's automotive sector, and the ability to operate as a trusted intermediary in a high-stakes environment. Familiarity with autonomous vehicle systems and safety management frameworks like SMS or UNECE regulations would strengthen your candidacy, though the core requirement is proven regulatory expertise in the German transportation space.
