About this role

Burgess & Niple is seeking a Civil Engineering co-op student to join their bridge inspection team in Portland for Summer 2027. You'll work full-time alongside experienced engineers and technicians learning the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) process on real projects for state DOTs and local agencies. The work is hands-on and field-based: you'll document bridge conditions using tablets and cameras, travel to project sites (including some overnight trips), and work at heights with rope climbing experts while developing core technical and problem-solving skills.

This role requires you to be a current undergraduate pursuing a BS in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET program with at least one year of coursework completed. You'll need proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn specialized software like BlueBeam Revu and MicroStation or AutoCAD. The position demands physical capability—you must be comfortable working at heights, walking and climbing for extended periods, and carrying equipment up to 50 lbs. A valid driver's license and good driving record are required, as is availability for full-time work and occasional travel.

Burgess & Niple covers all travel and equipment expenses and provides parking. This is a structured introduction to bridge inspection consulting ideal for students serious about structural or infrastructure engineering and ready for genuine field experience.
