Description

Make a Difference When It Matters Most.

At Emergency Veterinary Care Centers (EVCC), we show up for pets and the people who love them on some of their hardest days.

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, enjoy working as part of a team, and want to make a meaningful impact every shift — this could be your place.

Who We Are

EVCC was created by veterinarians, for veterinarians — and for the communities they serve. Founded by 36 local general practice veterinarians (many still actively involved today), we were built to support the veterinary community, not compete with it.

Our Kalamazoo hospital is our fifth location, and we are proud to bring trusted, emergency-only care to the region.

But what truly defines EVCC isn’t just what we do — it’s how we do it.

WE

  • Lead with compassion
  • Respect and elevate our technicians
  • Support each other without ego
  • Communicate openly and professionally
  • Recognize that emergency medicine is demanding — and take care of our team because of it

What Life Is Like at EVCC

We genuinely care about whoever walks through our doors — whether it’s a critical patient, an anxious pet parent, or a teammate who needs support during a tough shift.

Emergency medicine is intense. It’s emotional. It’s unpredictable.

But it’s also deeply meaningful.

You won’t be “just an assistant” here. Your assessment skills, instincts, and voice matter. Our doctors value collaboration. Our leadership team listens. Growth is encouraged, not gatekept.

About this role

Emergency Veterinary Care Centers is hiring a Veterinary Assistant for swing shift (afternoons through late evening) at their Kalamazoo location. This is hands-on work supporting the emergency medicine team during some of the busiest and most unpredictable hours. You'll assist veterinarians and technicians with patient handling and restraint, maintain hospital cleanliness and equipment, provide direct care to hospitalized animals, and interact with anxious pet owners during stressful situations. The role also includes restocking supplies, basic administrative tasks, and monitoring patient comfort.

The position suits someone with previous animal care experience—whether as a veterinary assistant, kennel worker, shelter staff, or in pet boarding—though it's not strictly required if you have the right temperament. You'll need to be comfortable handling animals of all sizes, stay calm in a fast-paced emergency environment, lift up to 50 pounds regularly, and be available for evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts. Strong communication, reliability, and the ability to remain composed under pressure matter as much as technical skills.

EVCC emphasizes team culture and professional development. Beyond competitive pay and standard benefits (health coverage from day one, 401K match, PTO), they offer a continuing education allowance, mentorship, and genuine career growth. The hospital was founded by local veterinarians and positions itself as supporting rather than competing with the veterinary community, which shapes how they treat their staff.
