- Serve as the lead liaison between the flight vehicle and shipboard branches.
- Support Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), digital thread/twin management, and configuration control.
- Ensure design integrity through requirements traceability, verification, and validation processes.
- Plan and execute flight system to payload integration activities, ensuring clear hand offs between flight and shipboard integration work streams.
- Lead hardware in the loop (HWIL) and software in the loop (SWIL) verification of the flight to shipboard interface; define test procedures, success criteria, and analyze results.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate/enable technical risks/opportunities specific to the payload interface; track mitigation/enabling actions.
- Provide technical input to Engineering Review Boards (ERB), technical Risk and Opportunities Management Boards (TRMB), and Configuration Control Boards (CCB) as the flight to shipboard interface subject matter expert.
- Contribute fight system to shipboard interface content to the Systems Engineering Plan (SEP), Mission Assurance Plan, and Test & Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP).
- Assist in the oversight of Integration and Test efforts for the LOC missile inclusive of hardware, instrumentation, data-collection, post-test analysis, and ship-integration.
- Prepare and present flight to shipboard integration status for major technical and programmatic LOC reviews.
- Advise and contribute on flight system cost/schedule/technical trade-offs, and its documentation.

About this role
JRC's Missiles and Space Team is seeking a systems engineer to lead the technical integration of a new flight vehicle into Virginia Class submarines. You would serve as the primary liaison between flight vehicle development and shipboard operations, owning the physical and electrical interfaces that allow the submarine platform to receive, process, and execute mission plans. This is a hands-on role requiring you to define interface requirements, oversee simulator development for testing, conduct hardware and software-in-the-loop verification, and present integration status to senior government and contractor leadership.
The work spans the full lifecycle of integration activities: from requirements traceability and design reviews through test execution and risk management. You'll coordinate across multiple technical teams, contribute to systems engineering documentation, and advise on cost and schedule trade-offs. Expect significant travel—roughly 50 percent—to test ranges, contractor facilities, and government labs to support integration events and milestone assessments.
You'll need at least seven years of defense systems engineering experience on missile or aerospace programs, plus two years working with naval shipboard systems or mission planning. A bachelor's degree in engineering is required, along with an active Secret clearance and eligibility for Top Secret/SCI. Prior experience with Virginia Class submarines, the Tomahawk Weapons System, or strategic missile programs would be valuable. This is a contract position based in Washington, DC, requiring in-office presence.
