About this role

Supporting a mission-driven research and community engagement office requires someone who can manage the financial backbone of sponsored projects while keeping operations running smoothly. This Accounting Specialist role at the Social Work Office of Research & Public Service handles day-to-day transaction processing, vendor management, travel and procurement oversight, and the documentation that keeps audits and sponsor invoicing on track. You'd be the person ensuring everything is coded correctly, properly approved, and audit-ready—fixing gaps in documentation and coordinating across staff, vendors, and University offices to resolve issues before they become problems.

Beyond transaction processing, the role emphasizes fiscal guidance and process improvement. You'd help staff understand and follow financial procedures, support onboarding and training, communicate policy updates, and spot recurring issues to recommend better workflows. This means working both independently on detailed accounting tasks and collaboratively with colleagues across the organization who may have varying levels of financial knowledge.

The position requires an Associate's degree in accounting or a related field (or equivalent experience), two years of progressively responsible accounting and administrative work, and solid knowledge of basic accounting principles and Microsoft Office. A Bachelor's degree and prior experience in an academic environment are preferred, as is familiarity with University financial systems and sponsored-project practices. Based in Nashville with a hybrid arrangement allowing up to two days remote work weekly, the role offers a salary range of $50,000–$54,000 and UT's comprehensive benefits package.
