Description

Secure Every Identity, from AI to Human

This work requires a relentless drive to solve complex challenges with real-world stakes. We are looking for builders and owners who operate with speed and urgency and execute with excellence.

Staff Software Engineer, Platform & Infrastructure

Tagline: Build the engine that builds Okta.

šŸš€ Your Mission: Define the Future of Developer Velocity at Okta

Are you a software engineer who believes that an exceptional developer platform is the key to unlocking engineering-wide innovation? Are you obsessed with building the high-leverage tools, services, and automated infrastructure that make building, testing, and deploying software a seamless experience?

Okta's Platform & Infrastructure team is the central nervous system for all of Okta Engineering. We build and own the entire internal developer platform—the CI/CD pipelines, the build-and-test orchestration, and the multi-cloud infrastructure that powers it all.

This isn't just about maintaining systems. It's about building a scalable, resilient, and blazing-fast "paved road" that empowers hundreds of engineers to ship high-quality code, multiple times a day.

Our scale is immense. We run tens of thousands of automated tests for every single commit. As Okta grows, this CI/CD workload presents a monumental engineering challenge.

Your primary goal will be to attack this problem head-on. You will be a key builderĀ  in our quest to shrink massive, distributed compute jobs from hours or days down to just minutes. This role requires deep systems thinking, clever orchestration, and a passion for wringing every last drop of performance out of the infrastructure.

šŸ’» What You'll Do (The Impact)

As a Staff Engineer, you are a technical leader, architect, and hands-on builder. You will:

  • Architect & Build: Design, code, and operate the next generation of our CI/CD platform, primarily using Go (Golang) and Python.
  • Master Kubernetes: Leverage your deep Kubernetes (K8s) expertise to orchestrate our complex and ephemeral build, test, and deployment workflows at massive scale.
  • Own the Multi-Cloud: Build services and automation that abstract and manage workloads extensively across AWS, GCP, and Azure, optimizing for cost, speed, and reliability.
  • Build a Platform, Not Just Tools: Create robust, self-service, and elegant internal products for our engineers. You'll treat our internal developers as your first-class customers.
  • Drive Innovation: You will not just use our build and CI systems, you will be responsible for building and scaling them.
  • Mentor & Lead: Collaborate with peers, mentor other engineers, and set the technical direction for major platform initiatives.

āœ… What You'll Bring (The Requirements)

We are looking for a seasoned engineer who has built and scaled internal platforms before.

  • 5+ years of experience in Software EngineeringĀ
  • Coding Skills: You are a strong software engineer first, with proven experience building and maintaining complex systems in Go (Golang) and/or Python.
  • Kubernetes is a Must: You have deep, practical experience building, running, and troubleshooting workloads on Kubernetes. You understand pods, operators, scheduling, and networking inside and out.
  • CI/CD as a Platform: You have architected, built, and/or significantly scaled CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab, Tekton, ArgoCD) as a platform for other engineers, not just as an end-user.
  • Cloud Expertise: You have demonstrable experience working in major cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure) and understand the nuances of their core services.
  • The Platform Ecosystem: You're fluent in the tools of the trade: Docker, container registries (like Artifactory), and modern build systems (like Gradle or Bazel).
  • Platform Mindset: You are customer-obsessed (your customers are other engineers) and have a proven ability to lead complex, cross-functional projects to completion.
  • Education: B.S. in Computer Science, equivalent technical experience, or just a proven track record of shipping incredible systems.

About this role

Okta's Platform & Infrastructure team is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the design and scaling of the internal developer platform that powers all of engineering. You'll architect and build the next generation of CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes orchestration, and multi-cloud infrastructure using Go and Python. The core challenge is transforming massive distributed compute jobs that currently take hours or days into minute-scale operations, while handling tens of thousands of automated tests per commit across AWS, GCP, and Azure.

This role demands deep systems expertise and hands-on technical leadership. You'll need 5+ years of software engineering experience with proven proficiency in Go and/or Python, along with substantial hands-on experience building and troubleshooting Kubernetes workloads at scale. You should have architected or significantly scaled CI/CD platforms before (not just used them), understand major cloud providers' core services, and be comfortable with Docker, container registries, and modern build systems. Beyond coding, you'll mentor peers, set technical direction for major initiatives, and treat internal engineers as first-class customers of the platform you build.

The position is based in Bengaluru and requires in-office work. A B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent demonstrated track record of shipping complex systems is expected.
