  • Demonstrated success designing, building, scaling, or operating complex mechanical systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical equipment, piping systems, pressure-containing equipment, structural supports, fabrication methods, utilities, and industrial installation practices.
  • Experience translating R&D, prototype, pilot-scale, or first-of-kind technical concepts into engineered systems.
  • Ability to work across a broad spectrum of engineering disciplines and coordinate with mechanical, process, controls, electrical, operations, maintenance, and procurement teams.
  • Experience evaluating technical vendors, engineering consultants, fabricators, and equipment suppliers.
  • Demonstrated ability to reduce project cost through vendor negotiation, value engineering, scope refinement, alternate sourcing, and practical design decisions.
  • Strong ability to review drawings, specifications, equipment datasheets, technical documentation, and fabrication packages.
  • Experience coordinating with outside EPC firms, engineering contractors, consultants, or fabrication partners.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions in ambiguous, fast-moving, and resource-constrained environments.
  • Strong commitment to safety, documentation, engineering quality, and practical execution.

About this role

CycloKinetics is building a first-of-its-kind biorefinery to convert biomass into high-performance propellants for aerospace and defense, and they need an experienced mechanical engineering leader to scale their technology from lab to commercial operations. As Senior Manager of Mechanical Engineering, you would oversee the design and build-out of process equipment, piping systems, pressure vessels, structures, and mechanical integration across the facility. This is a hands-on leadership role that bridges research concepts with practical, field-tested engineering solutions—working directly with R&D, controls engineers, operations teams, fabricators, and external vendors to execute a complex, integrated project.

The position demands someone with 20+ years of progressive experience in industrial, chemical processing, refinery, petrochemical, or similar engineered environments, plus at least 7 years leading technical teams. You would be responsible for reviewing and approving designs, managing vendor and consultant relationships, driving cost reduction through value engineering and design simplification, and supporting hazard reviews and commissioning. The role also includes mentoring your engineering team, maintaining design standards and documentation, and communicating technical risks and tradeoffs to leadership.

This is a full-time, in-office position based in Salt Lake City. It requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a track record of successfully designing and scaling complex mechanical systems in regulated industrial environments. The work involves hands-on problem-solving in a fast-moving, ambiguous setting where broad mechanical fundamentals and practical field experience matter as much as formal expertise.
