About this role
ISG is looking for a Senior Physical Substation Engineer to lead the design of high-voltage transmission and distribution substations for FirstEnergy, a longstanding utility client. You would own complete design packages—from one-line diagrams and general arrangements through grounding layouts, conduit routing, and equipment specifications—while ensuring compliance with IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and other regulatory standards. The role demands strong technical judgment to optimize for safety, reliability, constructability, and cost, along with responsibility for coordinating across civil, structural, and protection teams and serving as the primary technical contact resolving client design challenges.
This position suits an engineer with at least five years of substation physical design experience, a PE license, and a BS in electrical engineering. You'll need hands-on familiarity with grounding analysis software (WinIGS, CYME, CDEGS) and photometric tools, plus solid knowledge of substation equipment configurations, procurement, and industry codes. Leadership is central to the role: you'll mentor junior staff, review and approve deliverables, and lead design coordination meetings with clients and vendors.
Based in Des Moines and working in-office, you'll have the opportunity to build a long-term career within ISG's Energy Business Unit, which operates as an employee-owned firm sharing resources across offices nationwide. The salary range is $105,000 to $150,000, with benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, paid time off, profit sharing, an ESOP, and 401K options.
