Description
MongoDB is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Atlas Clusters Organization. The organization is responsible for building MongoDB Atlas, our database as a service offering and fastest growing product. Atlas allows users to deploy fault-tolerant, secure, globally distributed MongoDB clusters in just minutes. This includes developing software to interface with the three major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, and GCP) in order to bring security, durability, availability, and performance to all deployments of MongoDB.
Atlas Clusters Security builds the security experience that Atlas customers depend on for mission-critical applications. Across the organization we own cluster networking, data encryption, database authentication, and related controls.
This role sits on the Encryption & Compliance team. We own Encryption at Rest with customer-managed keys (Bring Your Own Key) across AWS, Azure, and GCP, including private networking to customer key management systems. We also own the security and compliance work that lets Atlas serve highly regulated markets, including government offerings and internal credential management. You will design and operate these systems in production, lead fleet-wide rollouts, and partner with customers when encryption or key-management issues hit their clusters.
We are looking to speak to candidates who are based in San Francisco and would like a hybrid or in-office working model.
What you’ll do
- Build and design new features for MongoDB Atlas
- Contribute to and lead complex technical projects
- Work closely with product and design teams, considering the user’s perspective while building technical solutions
- Work with customers and support engineers to fix issues
- Collaborate with team members to develop our codebase, best practices, and design principles
- Learn from and mentor other team members
- Join an on-call rotation to support Atlas’ production services
We’re looking for someone who
- Has at least 5 years of professional software development experience
- Is skilled at writing large-scale, distributed backend systems in a compiled language (Java, Go, etc.)
- Has experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Has led the launch of a new feature and maintained it in production
- Is eager to solve tough problems
- Has excellent communication skills
- Is curious, collaborative, and motivated
- Nice to have: experience with cloud key management (KMS / Key Vault / Cloud KMS), IAM, private networking, or encryption in a production SaaS environment
Success Measures
- In 3 months, you'll have shipped code into production and collaborated with the team to solve tough problems
- In 6 months, you'll have contributed to a large project and joined our on-call rotation
- In 12 months, you'll have designed new features, led development work, and become a go-to expert on Encryption at Rest, customer-managed keys, or a related part of the system

About this role
MongoDB's Atlas Clusters Security team is building the encryption and key management infrastructure that protects mission-critical databases across AWS, Azure, and GCP. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Encryption & Compliance team, you'd own systems handling encryption at rest with customer-managed keys, private networking to key management systems, and the security controls that let Atlas serve highly regulated markets. This is production-focused work: you'll design features, lead fleet-wide rollouts, troubleshoot customer issues, and join an on-call rotation supporting a widely-used SaaS platform.
The role calls for at least five years of backend software development experience, with demonstrated skill building large-scale distributed systems in compiled languages like Java or Go. You'll need hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider and a track record of shipping and maintaining features in production. Experience with cloud key management, IAM, private networking, or encryption in a production SaaS environment would be valuable but isn't required. Success here means shipping code quickly, contributing to complex projects, and becoming a recognized expert on encryption or key management within the team.
This is a hybrid position based in San Francisco, with a salary range of $126,000 to $248,000 plus equity, parental leave, and other standard benefits. The work appeals to engineers who want to solve hard infrastructure problems at scale while collaborating closely with product teams and customers.
