About this role
Working on heavy highway and bridge construction projects in Chicago, this role puts you in the field leading inspection teams and managing contract compliance for mid to large-scale transportation work. You'll oversee inspectors and office staff, review contractor submittals and schedules, conduct progress meetings, and handle day-to-day problem-solving—from resolving scheduling conflicts to flagging scope changes and potential claims. The position demands comfort with active construction sites, occasional adverse weather, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
The role requires a PE license and at least six years of resident engineering experience on transportation projects, plus specific certifications in OSHA, HMA, concrete, and aggregates. You'll need strong communication skills and ideally some background with IDOT, Tollway, or federally funded projects. This is a contract position based in Chicago with in-office work, offering a salary range of $83,000 to $129,000 depending on your qualifications.
Farnsworth Group is a 650-person architectural and engineering firm that's held Great Place to Work certification for eleven consecutive years. Full-time employees receive a 401(k) with 100% company match up to 5%, comprehensive health coverage, paid time off, professional development support, and a hybrid work option—though this specific role appears to require in-office presence given its field-based nature.
