About this role

BHE Renewables is hiring across multiple experience levels for substation engineering roles in Davenport, Iowa. The core work centers on designing electrical substations—from greenfield builds to expansions and modernizations—while applying industry standards like IEEE, NESC, and NEC. You'll develop design packages, equipment specifications, and protection/control integration plans; create physical drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams; and review contractor and consultant deliverables. The role also involves project scoping, estimating, construction support, and commissioning activities across diverse project types including renewable and thermal generation interconnections, transmission work, and grid modernization.

Beyond design, you'll provide technical input to engineering studies, assist during equipment failures, and support other departments as needed. Travel is minimal, typically under 10% for site visits and inspections. The position emphasizes technical leadership, clear communication with contractors and internal teams, sound judgment in ambiguous situations, and the ability to manage competing priorities and adapt to changing project goals.

The posting spans five levels—Engineer I through Principal Engineer—each with distinct experience and licensure requirements. Entry-level positions require only a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering; mid-level roles demand one to eight years of industry experience, with PE licensure becoming preferred or required at senior levels. Senior and Principal roles involve leading complex projects, mentoring junior engineers, and developing standards. Advancement depends on demonstrated technical expertise, leadership capability, and business needs.
