About this role
Whelen Engineering's Lead SMT role in Chester involves coordinating production operations on the second shift within the surface mount technology department. You'll lead a production team through assembly work, train and orient new employees, monitor performance, and step in for supervisory duties as needed. While not a formal supervisor position, you'll work autonomously to drive team momentum, propose process improvements, and serve as a technical resource for resolving complex problems on the line.
The position demands someone with solid production experience who can read technical drawings and specifications, understand quality standards, and adapt to new procedures and equipment. You'll need strong communication skills to work effectively across shifts and with various stakeholders. The role requires standing for the entire shift, lifting up to 35 pounds regularly, color distinction ability, and a commitment to safety and environmental compliance.
This is a full-time, in-office position paying $25–$30 per hour based on your experience. It suits someone ready to step into a lead role without formal supervisory responsibilities—someone who thrives on hands-on problem-solving, team coordination, and continuous improvement in a manufacturing environment.
