Description

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

The Chassis Team is responsible for horizontal infrastructure that underpins all Commercialization systems. This includes:

  • Critical backend systems - the platforms that power everything from trip matching to depot automation
  • Horizontal functionality - eg. world simulation for regression testing and evaluation purposes

We are looking for someone who is solution-oriented. You will work on cross-cutting problems that require cross-team collaboration, both technically (mobile app, cloud backends, and the Waymo Driver) and functionally (operations, product, legal, partnerships, policy & privacy) to develop and deliver business critical infrastructure.

In this hybrid role, you will report to an Engineering Manager.

You will:

  • Help build and evolve mission-critical horizontal infrastructure and tooling that underpins all commercialization systems
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to develop systems and processes as business needs grow and evolve
  • Scale our systems to meet the demands of commercial expansion and growing complexity
  • Solve hard, real-world problems such as world simulation for regression testing and evaluation of software services managing fleets for autonomous vehicles

You have:

  • BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years of backend or infrastructure experience

We prefer:

  • Experience with C++
  • Experience working in environments including nontechnical team members
  • Experience with operations tooling, developer productivity, or developer tools

About this role

Waymo's Chassis Team builds the foundational infrastructure that enables the company's autonomous ride-hail service and fleet operations. As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you'd own mission-critical backend systems and horizontal tooling—from trip matching platforms to world simulation for testing—that directly support commercial expansion. This is infrastructure work with real stakes: the systems you build need to scale reliably as Waymo grows its autonomous fleet across multiple states.

The role demands someone comfortable working across technical and organizational boundaries. You'll collaborate with mobile app teams, cloud backend engineers, the Waymo Driver itself, and nontechnical stakeholders in operations, product, and legal to solve hard problems around fleet management and system reliability. You'll need at least three years of backend or infrastructure experience and a CS degree or equivalent. C++ experience is preferred, as is familiarity with operations tooling or developer productivity work.

This is a hybrid position in San Francisco reporting to an Engineering Manager, with a base salary of $213,000–$263,000 plus eligibility for annual bonuses and equity. It suits someone who enjoys solving cross-cutting problems and thrives in environments where technical work intersects with business needs.
