  • Design and implement core metrics that guide the team efforts and help design and evaluate A/B experiments that drive these metrics.
  • Explore alternative experimentation techniques to help internal teams evaluate their ideas faster.
  • Work cross-functionally to build and communicate key insights, and collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, designers, and researchers to help build the next experiences on Pinterest.

What we’re looking for:

  • Master’s degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, applied sciences, computer science or related field.
  • Ability to manipulate large data sets with high dimensionality and complexity; fluency in SQL and a scripting language (Python or R)
  • experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches including in the fields of Machine Learning, Statistical Modeling, Forecasting, Econometrics or other related fields
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain learnings to both technical and non-technical partners
  • Strong critical thinking when working with AI-generated suggestions, with a clear approach to validating correctness, performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Ability to connect data analysis to real business problems, in order to impact business performance.

In-Office Requirement Statement:

  • We let the type of work you do guide the collaboration style. That means we’re not always working in an office, but we continue to gather for key moments of collaboration and connection
  • This role may require you to be located near an office for in-person collaboration, and therefore may need to be located a commutable distance from one of our Pinterest offices.

About this role

Pinterest is hiring a Data Scientist to work on recommendation systems and product insights for a platform with over 640 million users. You'd apply statistical modeling, SQL, and scripting languages (Python or R) to understand user behavior, design core metrics, and evaluate A/B experiments that directly influence product decisions. The role spans multiple data science teams across the company, so your work could touch personalization for users, measurement for advertisers, or internal tools for faster product iteration—all requiring you to translate findings into actionable recommendations for product managers, engineers, and designers.

The position requires a Master's degree in a quantitative field and hands-on experience with large datasets and analytical techniques like machine learning or statistical modeling. You'll need strong communication skills to explain technical insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, plus the ability to think critically about data and connect analysis to real business outcomes. The role is based in San Francisco with an in-office requirement for key collaboration moments, and the salary range is $124,950 to $168,000.

This is a good fit if you have graduate-level training in a quantitative discipline, solid coding skills, and experience solving real problems with data—and if you're energized by working on products used by hundreds of millions of people.
