About this role
Ascension's Med Surg Float Pool position offers registered nurses the opportunity to work across multiple specialized units within the Nashville-area Saint Thomas health system, including neurology, orthopedics, oncology, pulmonary post-thoracic surgery, renal dialysis, and vascular care. Rather than being assigned to a single unit, you would rotate through these diverse settings, implementing complex care plans and monitoring patients with varying acuity levels. This role demands strong clinical assessment skills and the ability to coordinate seamlessly with physicians, therapists, and specialists to ensure continuity of care.
The position suits nurses who thrive in dynamic environments and want exposure to multiple specialties without the constraints of a fixed assignment. You'll serve as a central point of communication for patient care teams, rapidly assess discharge needs, and advocate for patients navigating complex medical situations. The float pool structure means variety in your day-to-day work, though it also requires flexibility and the ability to quickly orient to different unit protocols and patient populations.
You must hold an active RN license from the Tennessee Board of Nursing prior to hire and obtain BLS certification within 30 days of your start date. This is a full-time, in-person role based in Nashville, with assignments across four Ascension Saint Thomas locations in the greater Nashville area.
