About this role
ClientEarth is seeking a legal trainee to complete their mandatory German Referendariat with an environmental law charity focused on climate change, nature protection, and corporate accountability. Based in Berlin with hybrid flexibility, the role runs from January 2027 through January 2028 and involves drafting legal opinions and memos, conducting environmental law research, and engaging with NGOs and other stakeholders across one of six priority areas: emissions reduction, fundamental rights, environmental democracy, marine biodiversity, accountable corporations, or sustainable food systems.
You'll need a law degree, fluency in English at C1 level, and background knowledge in environmental law, public international law, European law, or administrative law. Critically, you must already be enrolled in a Legal Traineeship (Referendariat) in Germany to be eligible. The application process is competitive with an October 26 deadline for initial submissions, followed by written questions due November 2, and interviews beginning November 9. ClientEarth encourages applications from candidates who meet some—not necessarily all—of the stated criteria and offers flexible working arrangements allowing 80% remote work within Germany.
