About this role
Star Mountain Capital is seeking a Portfolio Operations Engineer to work directly embedded within its lower middle-market portfolio companies, diagnosing operational workflows and building AI-enabled solutions that drive measurable efficiency and cost improvements. You would split your time between analyzing how these businesses actually run—mapping processes, identifying automation opportunities, and authoring product requirements documents—and then implementing working technical solutions alongside Star Mountain's internal engineering teams. The role bridges operations consulting and software engineering: you need to think rigorously about business problems, earn trust quickly with executive teams, and deliver from diagnosis to deployment within each engagement.
The ideal candidate has one to three years combining engineering and business operations experience, whether from consulting, fintech, software, banking, or private equity backgrounds. You'll need a strong technical foundation—Computer Science or equivalent degree, working Python proficiency, and hands-on experience with automation, APIs, and data work. Familiarity with AI and LLM tooling is preferred, particularly if you've deployed these systems in real business settings. Beyond the technical skills, this role demands business fluency to engage credibly with management teams, clear communication to present findings with confidence, and the ability to operate effectively in ambiguity across diverse industries without a defined playbook.
This is a full-time, in-office position in Tampa, Florida at a rapidly growing $4.5 billion AUM firm with strong employee ownership and profit-sharing for all U.S. staff. Star Mountain emphasizes long-term career development and alignment of interests, backed by a senior team with deep investment experience from top-tier firms.
