Description
About Vatn Systems:
Vatn Systems is an innovative startup at the forefront of designing and manufacturing autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Our mission is to revolutionize underwater security, exploration, research, and operations through cutting-edge technology and unparalleled engineering. Our AUVs are defining the next generation of underwater autonomy.
The Role
We are looking for a talented and motivated Data Engineer / Analyst to join our growing team. Every vehicle we put in the water generates gigabytes of navigation, sonar, acoustic, and vehicle-health data, and today that data is underused. In this role, you will own the pipeline that turns raw mission logs into answers. The ideal candidate is a proactive individual who is comfortable owning data infrastructure end to end and who is as interested in the physics and purpose behind the data as in the plumbing that moves it.
What You'll Do
- Design, build, and maintain data pipelines that ingest post-mission logs from vehicles and field kits into a queryable, durable data store.
- Develop reusable statistical analysis tooling in Python and/or Matlab for post-mission reconstruction, including coordinate frame handling, time alignment across asynchronous sensors, and navigation error characterization.
- Build and maintain dashboards and reports that communicate vehicle and subsystem performance clearly to engineers, leadership, and customers.
- Define and track quantitative performance metrics across programs and make trends visible over time.
- Establish data schemas, naming conventions, and metadata standards so that test data is discoverable and traceable to a specific vehicle, build, and configuration.
- Support field test campaigns by turning around rapid analysis between runs and flagging anomalies before the next deployment.
- Build automated data quality checks and monitoring to catch dropped telemetry, clock issues, and sensor faults early.
- Produce analysis products that feed customer deliverables, test reports, and internal design reviews.
- Write and maintain documentation and tests so that pipelines and analyses are reproducible by others on the team.
What You'll Need
Required Qualifications:
- Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Professional experience in data engineering, statistical analysis, or a comparable role.
- Strong proficiency in Python, Matlab and/or R data ecosystems (e.g., NumPy, pandas, Polars).
- Strong SQL skills and experience designing schemas for relational or time-series databases.
- Experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines that handle large, messy, real-world sensor or log data.
- Familiarity with statistical methods, data transformation techniques, and data visualization.
- Experience building dashboards or visualization tooling (e.g., Grafana, Plotly/Dash, Streamlit).
- Ability to work with time-series data across multiple asynchronous sources, including timestamp alignment and resampling.
- Proficiency with version control systems, specifically Git.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, strong written communication, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- United States Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Ability to gain a security clearance.
Nice-to-Haves:
- Experience with robotics data formats and middleware (e.g., ROS 2, rosbag/MCAP, DDS, Protobuf).
- Experience with leveraging machine learning for time-series and/or navigational data
- Experience with columnar and time-series storage formats and engines (e.g., Parquet, DuckDB, TimescaleDB, InfluxDB, ClickHouse).
- Familiarity with geospatial data and coordinate systems (WGS84, UTM, local tangent plane / NED frames) and tools such as GeoPandas, PROJ, or QGIS.
- Experience with signal processing techniques (e.g., filtering, Fast Fourier Transforms, sensor data conditioning).
- Exposure to navigation and state estimation concepts (INS, DVL, GNSS-denied operation, Kalman filtering).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and infrastructure-as-code practices.
- Knowledge of containerization technologies like Docker, and experience with CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with maritime sensors, underwater acoustics, or subsea systems.
- Prior experience at a startup and/or defense company.
- Willingness to participate in on-water testing and field operations as needed.
Vatn is an equal opportunity employer.
About this role
Vatn Systems is building autonomous underwater vehicles, and this role owns the data infrastructure that transforms raw mission logs into actionable intelligence. You'll design end-to-end pipelines ingesting terabytes of navigation, sonar, acoustic, and vehicle-health data, then develop statistical analysis tools and dashboards that communicate vehicle performance to engineers, customers, and leadership. The work spans the full stack: schema design, ETL pipeline development, time-series analysis across asynchronous sensors, data quality monitoring, and rapid turnaround analysis during field campaigns.
This is a strong fit if you have professional experience in data engineering or statistical analysis, solid Python and SQL skills, and comfort building and maintaining production pipelines that handle messy sensor data. You should understand statistical methods and data visualization tools, be familiar with time-series alignment and resampling, and have version control experience. A background in engineering, computer science, data science, applied mathematics, or physics is expected. The role particularly values candidates interested in the physics and purpose behind the data, not just the infrastructure—experience with robotics data formats, geospatial coordinate systems, signal processing, or navigation concepts is a plus.
The position is full-time and in-office in Bristol, Rhode Island. You'll need to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with the ability to obtain a security clearance, and willingness to participate in on-water testing is expected.
