About this role
Hyliion's Field Service Engineer role centers on deploying and supporting the KARNO Power Module, a distributed power generator designed for defense and data center applications. You'll begin with three to four months of intensive training in Milford, Ohio, learning heat engine fundamentals, PLC and HMI systems, and advanced controls alongside the engineering and manufacturing teams. After that foundation, you'll transition to field work installing, commissioning, and maintaining KARNO units at customer sites, starting on the West Coast and expanding nationally as the installed base grows.
The position demands someone with a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, or related engineering, plus at least five years of hands-on field service and troubleshooting experience. You'll need solid expertise with high-voltage electrical systems (up to 800V), advanced control systems, PLCs, and instrumentation—the ability to diagnose and resolve issues across these domains independently, supported remotely by engineering. Travel is substantial (70 to 80%), often involving extended on-site assignments of weeks or months, and you'll need a valid driver's license and comfort operating a service van and working with energized electrical systems.
This hybrid role suits someone who thrives in both technical problem-solving and direct customer interaction, with the physical capability to work in varied conditions and lift up to 50 pounds. Background in energy, power generation, or alternative fuels is preferred, as are OSHA and electrical safety certifications. Hyliion emphasizes AI as a core tool across the organization, so comfort adopting technology to work faster and solve complex problems is expected.
