About this role
University of Tennessee at Martin is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to lead the design and evaluation of explainable AI systems for pediatric healthcare applications. You would bridge user research and technical implementation, conducting interviews and workflow analyses with clinical stakeholders, then translating those findings into wireframes, prototypes, and AI-enabled interfaces. The role demands hands-on work finetuning machine learning models alongside design—you'll be responsible for assessing usability, accessibility, trust, and adoption across the systems you build, while also documenting requirements and evaluation outcomes for publication.
This position suits someone with a Ph.D. in computer science, HCI, medical informatics, or a closely related field, backed by demonstrated expertise in AI, machine learning, and ideally causal modeling or knowledge graphs. You should have a publication record in top-tier venues and strong quantitative skills. Beyond individual contribution, you'll mentor students and junior researchers in UX and usability methods, and help prepare grant applications and manuscripts that advance the research agenda.
The role is based in Memphis and requires in-office presence, with occasional evening or weekend work and the possibility of travel. This is a full-time postdoctoral appointment suited to someone ready to move beyond dissertation research into independent, applied research leadership at the intersection of AI and human-centered design.
