About this role
The University of Tennessee at Martin's Huntsville office seeks someone to bridge university research capabilities with the aerospace and defense sector in Alabama's premier tech hub. You'd spend the majority of your time building and maintaining relationships with federal agencies and corporations—program managers, CTOs, and decision-makers—while developing a deep understanding of their research priorities and workforce needs. This involves presenting university expertise, connecting investigators with potential sponsors, and identifying opportunities where multidisciplinary teams can compete for large contracts and research centers.
The role balances business development with hands-on project management. You'll monitor performance milestones, facilitate communication between university teams and sponsors, troubleshoot when projects slip, and advise faculty on sponsor expectations. You'll also organize technical workshops, represent the university at regional events, and contribute local market insight to reports and presentations. Success requires strong project-management fundamentals, excellent communication across technical and non-technical audiences, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities under external deadlines.
This position demands at least three years in business development or opportunity identification for research-based organizations, along with a bachelor's degree and demonstrated project-management experience. Preferred candidates hold a STEM master's degree and have five years in aerospace or defense-focused roles, ideally with government or military background. You'll need to obtain a Department of Defense security clearance, work onsite in Huntsville, and be authorized to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship. The salary range is $80,000 to $110,000.
