About this role

UT Research Foundation seeks a technology manager to bridge university innovation and commercial opportunity across the UT System. You would work directly with faculty, researchers, and students to identify promising inventions, evaluate their market potential, and shepherd them toward licensing or startup formation. This involves assessing technical feasibility and commercial viability, preparing marketing materials for industry partners, managing patent prosecution with counsel, and negotiating licensing and research agreements with external organizations and other institutions.

The role demands someone equally comfortable with complex science and business development. You'll need strong communication skills to translate unfamiliar research into clear value propositions, coordinate across multiple internal stakeholders (legal, compliance, sponsored programs), and manage several projects simultaneously. The position requires either a science or engineering degree with substantial professional experience, or an advanced degree in law, medicine, business, or a STEM field. Prior exposure to intellectual property, technology transfer, or startup ecosystems is preferred but not required.

Based in Memphis, this full-time in-office role offers a salary of $74,000–$83,000 for the Assistant level or $90,000–$100,000 for the Associate level, depending on your qualifications. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required due to export control restrictions. The University provides comprehensive healthcare, retirement, and professional development benefits, plus the advantage of Tennessee's lack of state income tax.
