About this role

This part-time research assistant role in the Hevener Lab at UT Health Science Center's Memphis campus offers hands-on experience across the full scope of molecular and biochemical research. You would support active experiments in recombinant DNA work, bacterial culture, protein purification, and enzyme characterization—preparing materials, running instrumentation like spectrophotometers and thermocyclers, and maintaining meticulous records of procedures and results. The work balances bench time with broader lab engagement: you'll attend weekly meetings and journal clubs, conduct literature searches, and help communicate findings through figures and summaries for internal presentations.

The role requires you to be a PharmD student at UT Health Science Center with genuine interest in biomedical or pharmaceutical sciences. Prior lab coursework or hands-on experience with basic techniques (pipetting, sterile technique, solution prep) is preferred but not required if you have solid foundational knowledge in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry. You'll work in a typical lab environment with biohazardous materials and chemicals, requiring standard PPE and strict adherence to safety protocols. Close supervision from Dr. Hevener or senior lab personnel means you'll follow established procedures while developing competence.

The schedule is flexible around your class obligations—4 to 8 hours weekly during semesters, ramping to 20 hours in summer—with occasional optional extended hours for time-sensitive experiments. This is explicitly framed as professional development; if your contributions support publishable work, you may have the chance to contribute to abstracts, posters, or publications.
