About this role

You'll be building and refining mathematical models of how infections spread and evolve within the body, working with both experimental data and clinical observations to understand respiratory disease dynamics. The role sits at the intersection of computational biology and infectious disease research, requiring you to translate biological questions into mechanistic models, estimate parameters from real data, and generate testable hypotheses about infection biology. You'll present your work regularly to the lab and broader scientific community, and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and grant proposals supporting an R01-funded research program.

This position is best suited for someone with a Ph.D. in mathematics, physics, computer science, or a related quantitative field who has already worked on modeling viral or bacterial infections and immune responses. You'll need solid programming skills in Python and/or Matlab, along with hands-on experience in parameter estimation and data-driven approaches. Strong communication—both written and verbal—matters here, since you'll be explaining complex models to collaborators and audiences with varying technical backgrounds.

The work is based in Memphis and conducted in-office, with occasional evening and weekend hours expected. You'll help design experiments, maintain rigorous records, and support the lab's broader research mission.
