About this role

University of Tennessee at Martin's pediatrics infectious disease lab is seeking someone to lead hands-on research involving viral and bacterial pathogens across multiple experimental systems. You would design and execute in vivo studies using mouse infection models, conduct tissue harvests and drug administration, maintain cell and microbial cultures, and perform a range of immunological and molecular techniques including flow cytometry, ELISAs, histology, and DNA/RNA extraction. Beyond the bench work, you'd manage day-to-day lab operations—coordinating equipment, ordering supplies, maintaining animal care—while ensuring biosafety and regulatory compliance.

The role demands strong technical depth in pathogen handling and experimental design, along with the ability to translate findings into publications and presentations. You'll train junior staff and students, document protocols meticulously, analyze complex datasets using appropriate statistics, and contribute to protocol development and literature reviews. The position is based in Memphis and requires occasional evening and weekend availability.

To qualify, you need a bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences or related field plus four years of research experience, or a master's degree with two years of experience. Success here depends on demonstrated competence across multiple experimental platforms, careful attention to scientific integrity and record-keeping, and the ability to communicate results effectively in writing.
