About this role
This assistant professor position combines research leadership with substantial technical depth in genomics software development. You would build and direct a lab while maintaining hands-on involvement in algorithm design, high-performance computing optimization, and open-source tool development for pangenomic analysis. The role expects you to mentor students, fellows, and technical staff; publish peer-reviewed research; secure federal funding; and present findings at scientific conferences. Success requires bridging computational and biological domains—translating complex technical work into insights that matter to biologists and end users alike.
The ideal candidate brings a PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, or a related field, plus at least five years developing high-performance computing solutions and open-source software in biomedical research. You should have proven expertise in statistical genomics, sequence alignment, pangenomics, and database design for HPC environments, with strong programming skills in C++ and Python and fluency in Linux. Experience with functional languages like Rust, software deployment tools (Nix, Guix, Conda), and full-stack genomics web services strengthens your candidacy. Critically, you need an active track record of securing federal research funding as a principal investigator and the communication skills to connect technology, biology, and diverse technical audiences.
