About this role
At UL Solutions, this role leads the technical foundation of vehicle safety programs across the automotive industry's most complex challenges. You'll own the development and review of functional safety documentation for vehicle programs, translating ISO 26262, ISO 21448, and UL 4600 standards into practical safety arguments and evidence-based concepts. Your work spans the full safety lifecycle—from hazard analysis and requirements decomposition through detailed FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, and STPA analyses—covering everything from traditional powertrains to L2-L4 autonomous driving systems, battery management, and power electronics.
This is fundamentally a client-facing technical leadership position. You'll lead safety workshops, guide clients through gap analyses and best practices, manage program interactions, and represent UL at industry events. The role also involves business development, where you'll define scope and budgetary estimates for new client proposals. While based remotely from Detroit, expect travel to customer sites and other UL locations as projects require.
The position demands 5+ years in automotive functional safety roles with hands-on experience in electronics, hardware, and software design. A degree in electrical, automotive, or mechanical engineering (or equivalent) is required, along with demonstrated expertise across the full range of safety analysis methods. The salary range is $110,000–$140,000 with a 10% annual bonus target, standard health and wellness benefits, and 15 days vacation plus 12 holidays annually.
