About this role

Allegheny Intermediate Unit is seeking a substitute paraprofessional to support preschool-age children in early intervention programs across Pittsburgh. This is a part-time position working directly with students who have special needs, assisting certified professionals in the classroom. The role combines hands-on personal care—including toileting, feeding, and mobility support—with instructional support using technology and adaptive equipment. You'll help reinforce learning activities, implement behavior management strategies and individualized education plans, and ensure a safe, organized classroom environment.

The work is physically active and requires flexibility. You'll sit on small chairs and the floor, lift up to 35 pounds, manage stairs, and respond quickly during emergencies. Beyond the classroom, duties include attending IEP conferences, supervising students during field trips and cafeteria time, and maintaining confidentiality with student records. Training in crisis intervention, CPR, and First Aid is preferred, and you'll be required to complete several background clearances and health screenings before hire.

This role suits someone with at least one to two years of experience working with children with special needs, strong communication skills, and the ability to follow the direction of teachers and therapists while working as part of a team. A high school diploma is required; an associate degree or PATTAN Paraeducator Certificate is preferred. The position pays $17 per hour.
