About this role
Allegheny Intermediate Unit is seeking a Special Education Teacher to deliver early intervention services to preschool-aged children across Moon, Montour, and West Allegheny school districts. You would work in an itinerant capacity, traveling throughout the region to provide instruction in the child's own environment—whether that's a preschool classroom, childcare setting, or home. The role combines direct service delivery with the assessment and eligibility determination that underpins early intervention, meaning you'd administer developmental screenings, complete formal evaluations, and develop IEPs alongside implementing the specialized instruction itself.
This position requires valid PA certification in Special Education PK-8 (required) and Early Childhood PK-4 (preferred), along with the ability to manage a caseload independently while staying organized across multiple sites and families. You'll need strong collaboration skills to work effectively with parents, IEP teams, and community partners, as well as the flexibility to embed instruction into each child's existing routines and learning environment rather than in a traditional classroom. Compliance with special education documentation, staying current on regulations and best practices, and representing the AIU's mission to families are core to the work.
The position is full-time on a 190-day school calendar (August to August) and offers salary and benefits according to the AIUEA scale. You'll need current background clearances (Act 114, 34, 151, and NSOR) prior to hire and must be comfortable with the physical demands of the role, including travel, lifting materials, and working in varied community settings.
