About this role

Allegheny Intermediate Unit is seeking an Educational Interpreter to provide ASL-to-English and English-to-ASL interpretation for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind students across multiple school districts in the Pittsburgh area. You would work directly with assigned students throughout the school day—in classrooms, labs, assemblies, athletic events, and field trips—ensuring they have full access to instruction, peer interaction, and school life. Beyond real-time interpreting, the role involves substantial preparation: reviewing lesson plans and materials ahead of time, collaborating with teachers and audiologists to optimize classroom sightlines, and informally teaching sign language to peers and staff to foster direct communication between students and their hearing peers.

This position requires Pennsylvania Department of Education certification (either a 3.5+ EIPA score or registration with the state office) and a high school diploma at minimum. Preferred qualifications include an associate's or bachelor's degree in interpreting and at least two years of educational interpreting experience. You would also contribute to IEP meetings and Communication Plans, consult with other specialists on language development, and commit to at least 20 hours of annual professional development to maintain expertise in evidence-based educational interpreting practices.

The role is full-time on a 189-day school calendar, based in Pittsburgh with travel to contracted school sites. You'll need reliable transportation, current background clearances, and the ability to sustain physical demands including repetitive hand and finger movements, extended sitting, and occasional lifting. Compensation follows the AIUFT scale.
