Description

Company Overview:

Beam Therapeutics is a biotechnology company committed to establishing the leading, fully integrated platform for precision genetic medicines. To achieve this vision, Beam has assembled a platform with integrated gene editing, delivery and internal manufacturing capabilities. Beam’s suite of gene editing technologies is anchored by base editing, a proprietary technology that is designed to enable precise, predictable and efficient single base changes, at targeted genomic sequences, without making double-stranded breaks in the DNA. This has the potential to enable a wide range of therapeutic editing strategies that Beam is using to advance a diversified portfolio of base editing programs. Beam is a values-driven organization committed to its people, cutting-edge science, and a vision of providing life-long cures to patients suffering from serious diseases.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the site subject matter expert for Rockwell FactoryTalk PharmaSuite MES, including configuration, master recipe and workflow authoring, exception handling, and defect triage.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and lifecycle management of electronic batch records (EBR) for clinical and commercial cell therapy manufacturing processes, including phase design, calculations, transitions, CPP/process limits, and electronic signature flows.
  • Convert paper master batch records into compliant, operator-friendly electronic execution in partnership with Manufacturing, MS&T, and Quality.
  • Own MES change control end to end: impact assessment, requirement/functional/configuration specifications, test protocol authoring and execution (IQ/OQ/PQ), deviation documentation, and requirements traceability matrix support.
  • Support MES system implementation and lifecycle, including system architecture, platform components, and interfaces to partner systems (SAP, LIMS, CMMS, PI, and patient logistics chain-of-identity / chain-of-custody systems).
  • Support the deployment of PharmaSuite MES to new and existing suites, processes, and products as the site scales capacity across modalities.
  • Support inspection and licensure readiness, including mock pre-license inspection runs, audit trail review, data integrity controls per 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11, and MES business continuity procedures.
  • Provide floor-side support, hypercare, and operator training during go-live; translate operator feedback into practical recipe and workflow improvements.
  • Support plant operations and troubleshoot automation issues, including participation in an on-call / after-hours support rotation for GMP manufacturing.

About this role

Beam Therapeutics is building out automation and manufacturing systems for its gene therapy platform in Durham, and this role sits at the center of that effort. You'd own the Rockwell PharmaSuite MES system—designing electronic batch records, configuring master recipes, managing change control, and ensuring compliance with FDA and EU regulations. The work spans the full lifecycle: from converting paper batch records into compliant digital workflows, through validation and go-live support, to troubleshooting production issues and mentoring junior engineers. You'd also support related automation platforms like DeltaV, PI, and Ignition as the site scales.

This is a hands-on technical role that requires deep expertise in GMP manufacturing and MES platforms. You'll need at least 6 years of relevant experience (8+ for the Sr. Engineer III level), with demonstrated proficiency in designing and validating regulated MES systems. Rockwell PharmaSuite experience is strongly preferred; alternatives like Syncade, PAS-X, Tulip, or Apprentice are considered. You should be comfortable with computer system validation frameworks (GAMP 5, 21 CFR Part 11, EU Annex 11) and have worked in biotech, pharma, or medical device manufacturing before.

Beyond technical chops, you'll need to work effectively across teams—process development, manufacturing operations, quality, IT, and finance—and be ready for on-call support during GMP production. The role offers a chance to shape long-term automation strategy at a growing biotech company. The position is full-time, in-office in Durham, with a salary range of $140,000–$185,000.
