About ON.energy

ON.energy is setting the standard for large load interconnection. ON’s patented AI UPS™ is a medium-voltage UPS that serves as a firewall, protecting the data center from the grid, and the grid from the data center. With multiple gigawatts currently under construction, we are enabling grid-safe data centers.

Role

We are hiring a Senior Intellectual Property Paralegal to assist with the IP and operational backbone of that work. This is a hands-on role for someone who is happiest when the records are current, the repository is accurate, every document has a number and a home, and nothing is waiting on a signature that no one has chased. Roughly half the job is traditional paralegal work, and half is IP prosecution and operations: the systems, workflows and reporting that let a lean department carry a large volume.

This role is part of a well-supported small team with a large impact, working directly with the Legal Ops Manager and supporting our Deputy General Counsel, Vice President of IP and Executive Legal Counsel.

Tasks description

IP Portfolio management

  • Grow and maintain the IP portfolio records and disclosure form repository.
  • Facilitate efficient patent draft reviews with the inventors.
  • Liaison with external patent agents and patent attorneys.

Contracts support

  • Support Sales, Procurement and Supply Chain together with legal counsel in their review of contracts, with a focus on the IP related language.
  • Develop risk positions relate thereto.

Document control and records

  • Administer the IP document numbering system, assigning and recording document numbers across matter types and keeping the register clean.
  • Maintain the IP Portfolio status tracking systems.
  • File formal notices, receipts, assignments, declarations and draft sets to the correct matter file.
  • Support records retention and legal hold administration.

Legal operations and systems

  • Maintain the legal request intake workflow, so requests arrive with the information Legal needs and are triaged consistently.
  • Support requests from internal stakeholders, External Legal Counsel and Attorneys.
  • Support requests related to IP landscape monitoring and strategy.
  • Produce recurring reporting on various IP Portfolio metrics.

Cross-functional support

  • Support Intellectual Property, Corporate and Legal functions

Qualifications

Required

  • Eight to twelve years of IP paralegal experience, with at least two of those years in an in-house legal department.
    • Litigation experience required
  • Demonstrated ownership of operational tasks of IP rights assertion matters
  • Hands-on experience administering contract records and execution: repositories, signature routing, filing and deadline tracking.
  • Advanced Microsoft 365 skills, particularly SharePoint, Excel and Word, including document formatting, styles and comparison.
  • Proficiency with Artificial Intelligence tools required.
  • Exceptional organization and follow-through. You keep your own tracker, you know what is outstanding without being asked, and items do not go quiet on your watch.
  • Precision with detail. Entity names, signature blocks, effective dates, defined terms and document numbers are exactly right, because in this role they are the work product.
  • Discretion with confidential intellectual property, commercial, financial and personnel information.

Strongly preferred

  • Professional working proficiency in English and Spanish, written and spoken.
  • Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program, or NALA Certified Paralegal (CP) or NFPA Registered Paralegal (RP/CRP) credential.
  • Experience in energy, renewables, construction, manufacturing or another asset-heavy industry with product development teams.
  • Exposure to legal spend management or e-billing.
  • Bachelor’s degree.

About this role

ON.energy is building grid-safe data centers using patented AI UPS technology, and they need a Sr. Intellectual Property Paralegal to manage the operational and administrative backbone of their IP function. This is a contract position based in Houston, requiring someone who thrives on precision, systems, and accountability—the kind of person who tracks what's outstanding without being asked and ensures nothing slips through.

The role splits evenly between traditional paralegal work and IP operations. On one side, you'll manage the IP portfolio, facilitate patent reviews with inventors, liaison with external counsel, and support contract reviews with a focus on IP language. On the other, you'll own the document control systems, administer the IP numbering system, maintain portfolio tracking, handle records retention, and produce portfolio metrics reporting. You'll also manage the legal intake workflow and support cross-functional requests from internal teams and external counsel. This is hands-on work where accuracy in entity names, dates, defined terms, and filing deadlines directly reflects the quality of your output.

You'll need 8–12 years of IP paralegal experience with at least two years in-house, plus required litigation background and demonstrated ownership of IP rights assertion matters. Strong Microsoft 365 skills (SharePoint, Excel, Word) and proficiency with AI tools are essential. The role calls for exceptional organization, meticulous attention to detail, and discretion with confidential information. A paralegal certificate, CP, or RP/CRP credential is strongly preferred, as is experience in energy, manufacturing, or other asset-heavy industries with product development. You'll report to the Legal Ops Manager and support the Deputy General Counsel and VP of IP. The position includes competitive salary, performance bonus, health insurance, 401(k) match, and PTO.
