Description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today, SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of making life multiplanetary and expanding consciousness to the stars.

SpaceXSI is building Super Intelligence to help humanity understand the universe. Our teams are building the full Super Intelligence stack: from our Colossus supercomputers, to Grok models, to our suite of applications, including Grok Bot, Grok Build, Grok Imagine, Grok Voice, and X. We're creating a powerful flywheel where more compute trains better models, better models power more useful products, and what we learn from people using those products shapes what we build next.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Power Generation Engineering team is seeking a talented Fluids Engineer where you will have the opportunity to utilize your knowledge, experience, and creativity to rapidly design, build, and activate fluid systems supporting power plants and related generation infrastructure.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, build, and activate fluid systems for power generation plants, including fuel gas, ammonia, water, compressed/instrument air, and HVAC
  • Utilize knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid flow, and control theory to design and analyze power plant process and utility fluid systems
  • Model piping assemblies using CAD software and perform piping stress analysis
  • Read and develop detailed piping and instrumentation diagrams of complex fluids systems
  • Select components, such as valves, pumps, piping, tanks, heat exchangers, and filters, and provide detailed specifications for their purchase
  • Coordinate with engineers from other disciplines (civil, structural, electrical, controls, etc) to establish a complete system design
  • Manage the fabrication and installation of fluid systems and other construction projects occurring at the power plant, hands-on in the field, alongside skilled technician teams
  • Perform planning, analysis, and troubleshooting of system performance during real-time plant operations, commissioning, and post-outage data reviews
  • Work closely with operations teams to ensure system design is well-understood and easy to operate long term
  • Provide innovative solutions to problems under minimal supervision or direction

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of experience with fluid systems or process engineering

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in mechanical, chemical, or related engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience working with industrial fluid systems in a professional setting or outside the classroom project team
  • Experience with fuel gas, ammonia (storage, delivery, and/or process use), water treatment or cooling water, compressed/instrument air, and HVAC or chilled-water systems
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design, build, and operation of pressurized fluid systems per ASME B31, ASME B&PV Code Section VIII, or other applicable standards
  • Experience using Siemens NX, SOLIDWORKS, or similar CAD software
  • Experience using CAESAR II or similar pipe stress analysis programs
  • Experience using python or other programming languages for data review and analysis
  • Familiarity with industrial piping, fittings, and specifications (ASME/ANSI)
  • Familiarity with instrumentation selection in industrial or severe service
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting control systems required for remote or plant operations
  • Excellent written and oral communication, especially translating technical concepts for non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work with and lead technicians during fabrication and commissioning of systems
  • Familiarity with Root-Cause Analysis and Risk Mitigation process
  • Adaptability to change in direction of projects

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing to travel to other SpaceX locations as necessary
  • Schedules vary due to plant operational needs - flexibility is required
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. unassisted
  • Lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position

About this role

SpaceXAI's Power Generation Engineering team is building fluid systems that support power plant operations—fuel gas, ammonia, water, compressed air, and HVAC among them. As a Fluids Engineer, you would design these systems from concept through commissioning, applying thermodynamics and fluid flow principles to solve real problems in the field. The work spans CAD modeling and piping stress analysis, component selection and specification, cross-disciplinary coordination, and hands-on management of fabrication and installation alongside technician teams. You'd also troubleshoot live system performance during plant operations and work closely with operations staff to ensure designs are practical and maintainable.

This role demands both technical depth and practical versatility. You'll need a bachelor's degree in engineering and at least a year of fluid systems or process engineering experience to qualify, though the ideal candidate brings five or more years of hands-on industrial experience, familiarity with ASME standards for pressurized systems, proficiency in CAD and pipe stress analysis software, and a track record leading technicians through complex builds. Strong communication—especially the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences—is essential in a flat organization where you're expected to take initiative and deliver with minimal supervision.

The position is remote-based in Southaven, Mississippi, but requires flexibility for travel to other SpaceX locations and variable schedules driven by plant operational needs. Field work is regular, including lifting and physical activity, and you should be prepared for the unpredictability that comes with supporting active power generation infrastructure.
