AlixPartners seeks an exceptional Director to join its Risk Advisory practice, leading complex financial crimes investigations and advising clients on fraud risk, compliance, and institutional integrity. This role is suited for a senior leader who combines deep expertise—gained through a combination of in-house financial services risk and compliance roles (including at digital asset platforms), consulting experience, and/or federal law enforcement experience with the ability to deliver clear, actionable recommendations to executive and legal audiences. The ideal candidate brings a distinguished track mitigating risk related to money laundering, OFAC/sanctions, securities fraud, ACH and digital-asset fraud, and cyber-enabled financial crime, alongside demonstrated experience building and leading multidisciplinary teams.

What You'll Do

  • Lead BSA/AML, OFAC, and FCPA risk assessments and compliance program implementations for financial institutions, fintech companies, and digital-asset businesses; develop and validate corrective-action plans under regulatory agreements.

  • Take on interim Chief Compliance Officer, BSA Officer, Chief Risk Officer roles (or equivalent) for clients.

  • Lead complex domestic and cross-border investigations involving financial fraud, securities misconduct, insider trading, market manipulation, money laundering, asset misappropriation, corruption, identity theft, account takeover, ACH fraud, digital-asset fraud, and other forms of platform or enterprise abuse.

  • Apply blockchain analytics, transaction tracing, trading analysis, digital forensics, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and large-dataset analysis to identify patterns, trace funds, assess exposure, and support defensible conclusions.

  • Leverage blockchain forensics platforms (e.g., Chainalysis, TRM Labs, Elliptic) and commercial databases (Accurint, PACER) to distill complex financial data into clear visualizations and litigation-ready exhibits.

  • Engage effectively with regulators, law-enforcement agencies (FBI, IRS-CI, USSS, DEA, FinCEN, SEC, DOJ), prosecutors, industry associations, and external counsel—including preparing clear investigative reports, presentations, and supporting materials.

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams of investigators, forensic accountants, data analysts, cybersecurity specialists, and subject-matter experts; coach team members, review work product, and deliver performance evaluations.

  • Represent AlixPartners at industry events and contribute to practice development through thought leadership, white papers, CLE presentations, relationship building, and identification of new engagement opportunities.

  • Manage multiple workstreams, budgets, deadlines, and client expectations in fast-moving and sensitive matters requiring discretion and rapid response.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (accounting, finance, economics, or related discipline), or an equivalent combination of education, professional training, and substantial investigative experience.

  • A minimum of ten years of relevant experience leading complex investigations and risk and compliance matters related to financial crime, fraud risk, cybercrime, securities enforcement, and regulatory compliance.

  • Demonstrated experience managing significant, sensitive, and multi-jurisdictional matters from allegation or incident through findings, reporting, remediation, and stakeholder communication.

  • Deep knowledge in several of the following: financial fraud, securities misconduct, insider trading, cyber-enabled fraud, money laundering, ACH/payments fraud, digital assets, blockchain analytics, asset tracing, forensic accounting, or BSA/AML/OFAC compliance.

  • Experience working with financial institutions, capital-markets organizations, fintech or digital-asset businesses, regulators, prosecutors, or law-enforcement agencies.

  • Ability to understand technical investigative evidence and explain complex cyber, trading, transaction, or blockchain findings clearly to non-technical executives and clients.

  • Experience building or improving investigative capabilities, fraud controls, intelligence-sharing practices, policies, procedures, workflows, training, or quality standards.

  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, develop professionals, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality work under pressure.

  • Expert-level written, verbal, presentation, and executive-communication skills, with sound judgment and discretion in confidential matters; experience authoring expert reports, affidavits, and litigation-ready exhibits.

  • Analytical fluency with large and complex datasets; experience with SQL, blockchain forensics platforms, link-analysis tools, case-management systems, Excel, Power BI, Tableau, Python, or comparable tools.

  • Collaborative, entrepreneurial approach; ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team; willingness to travel domestically or internationally based on client needs.

  • CPA, CFE, CAMS or comparable professional certification is a strong asset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior leadership experience in risk and compliance roles within a financial institution.

  • Advanced degree such as an MBA.

  • Prior experience serving as an expert witness

  • Experience conducting regulatory monitorships, OCC or other agency formal agreement remediation, and engagement with supervisory or enforcement personnel.

  • Recognized training or certifications in incident response, cybersecurity, digital forensics, blockchain investigations, AML, fraud examination, or related disciplines.

  • Established credibility and relationships across the financial-crime, cyber, digital-asset, regulatory, or law-enforcement communities; demonstrated thought leadership through publications, speaking, or industry board participation.

  • Consulting or advisory experience, including client development, engagement management, proposal preparation, and cross-selling of integrated service lines.

About this role

AlixPartners' Risk Advisory practice is seeking a senior leader to direct investigations and compliance work across financial crime, fraud, and institutional integrity—a role that bridges deep technical expertise with executive advisory responsibilities. You would lead complex investigations spanning money laundering, securities fraud, digital-asset crimes, and regulatory compliance, while also stepping into interim Chief Compliance Officer or Chief Risk Officer positions for clients. The work demands fluency in blockchain analytics, transaction tracing, forensic accounting, and regulatory frameworks (BSA/AML, OFAC, FCPA), paired with the ability to translate findings into clear, litigation-ready reports and presentations for regulators, law enforcement, and executive audiences.

This is a leadership role as much as an investigative one. You would build and manage multidisciplinary teams of investigators, forensic accountants, data analysts, and cybersecurity specialists, while handling multiple high-stakes workstreams simultaneously. Success requires at least ten years of relevant experience—ideally combining in-house financial services or fintech compliance roles, consulting, and federal law enforcement background—along with demonstrated skill in managing sensitive, cross-border matters from inception through remediation and stakeholder communication.

The position is based in Boston and hybrid, though travel to client sites is expected to vary. You'll need strong technical fluency with datasets, forensics platforms (Chainalysis, TRM Labs), and analytical tools, combined with expert-level communication skills and sound judgment in confidential matters. Relevant credentials (CPA, CFE, CAMS) are valued. The salary range is $180,000–$400,000.
