Description
Summary
We’re Blue River, a team of innovators driven to create intelligent machinery that solves monumental problems for our customers. We empower our customers – farmers, construction crews, and foresters - to implement safer and more sustainable solutions, driving increased profitability with less reliance on scarce labor. We believe that focusing on the small stuff – pixel-by-pixel and task-by-task - leads to big gains.
Blue River Technology is based in Santa Clara, CA.
Job Responsibilities
- Leads the design and implementation of complex full stack solutions, ensuring scalability, performance, and reliability.
- Identifies system inefficiencies and drives architectural improvements, ensuring high-quality deliverables across projects.
- Mentors junior engineers, providing technical guidance and support through coaching, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
- Leads cross-functional collaboration efforts, ensuring seamless integration of features and adherence to product specifications.
- The employee participates in, and often leads, the design and development of software algorithms for intelligent agricultural robots/machines. Specifically, efforts are focused on improving the accuracy of and reducing the redundancy of commercial agricultural chemical applications used in the growing and cultivating of large-scale crops.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field plus 2 years of related experience.
- Required skills:
- Develop real-time capable software in C++ for Linux.
- Experience with benchmarking and improving jitter in end-to-end latency (1 yr).
- Use git and Bazel to build, test, and deploy vehicle software and firmware (1 yr).
- Develop pub-sub systems that interact with sensors and actuators on robotics systems via CAN and Ethernet (1 yr).
- Experience building end-to-end testing solutions for data-driven software, including unit, integration, HIL, and regression testing (1 yr).
- Implement vehicle software utilizing ROS and robotics software packages such as AOS, Flatbuffers, Protobufs (1 yr).
- May work remotely; periodic time in office required; must live within commuting distance of office.
- Up to 20% domestic and international travel required for in-field testing, data collection, R&D, and system deployments at customer sites.

About this role
Blue River is building autonomous systems for agriculture, and this senior role focuses on the software that makes their robots smarter about applying chemicals efficiently across large farms. You'd lead the design and implementation of full-stack solutions—working primarily in C++ on Linux, building real-time systems that interact with sensors and actuators via CAN and Ethernet, and using tools like ROS, Bazel, and git to manage complex vehicle software. The position demands hands-on technical depth: you'll need solid experience benchmarking latency, developing pub-sub architectures, and building comprehensive testing frameworks from unit tests through hardware-in-the-loop validation.
Beyond individual contribution, you'd mentor junior engineers and drive cross-functional collaboration to integrate features reliably. This is an IC4-level role, meaning the expectation is that you shape technical direction and improve system architecture, not just execute assigned work. You'll need at least two years of related experience after a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, plus demonstrated expertise across the specific tech stack—ideally a year or more in each of the core areas (latency optimization, vehicle software frameworks, testing infrastructure).
The role is based in Santa Clara with in-office presence required, though some remote work is possible if you're within commuting distance. Expect up to 20% travel for field testing and customer deployments. The salary range is $138K–$261K, with eligibility for bonus and benefits.
