About this role
American Equity's derivatives trading desk is looking for an intermediate-level trader to execute equity options and other derivative trades under the guidance of senior traders and the Head of Derivatives. You'd work directly with external dealers and market participants, monitor assigned asset classes for trading opportunities, and provide the leadership team with real-time intelligence on market sentiment, liquidity, and volatility. The role sits within a larger institutional investment operation—American Equity is part of Brookfield Wealth Solutions and manages retirement solutions for over half a million clients nationwide—so your work directly supports the company's investment strategy and risk management.
This position requires a strong quantitative foundation and comfort with financial markets tools. You'll spend significant time in Bloomberg, Excel (including macros and Power Query), and potentially SQL or Python to support trade analysis, pricing reviews, and scenario evaluation. The job calls for three or more years of trading, derivatives, or capital markets experience, ideally with hands-on exposure to equity options or other derivative instruments. A bachelor's degree in finance, economics, mathematics, or a related field is required, and progress toward or completion of a CFA is preferred.
The role is based in Des Moines with in-office work expected, though American Equity maintains satellite offices in New York and Houston. This is a full-time position suited to someone ready to deepen their expertise in derivatives trading while working under structured direction from more senior traders—a natural next step for someone with foundational trading experience who wants to specialize and grow within an established financial services firm.
