We’re Blue River, a team of innovators driven to create intelligent machinery that solves monumental problems for our customers. We empower our customers – farmers, construction crews, foresters, and other “outdoor” professionals - to implement safer and more sustainable solutions, driving increased profitability with less reliance on scarce labor. We believe that focusing on the small stuff – pixel-by-pixel and task-by-task - leads to big gains. With our partners at John Deere, we have the ability to bring innovative computer vision, machine learning, robotics, and automation systems to life, maximizing their potential impact.
Our people are at the heart of what we do. Through cross-disciplinary collaboration, this mission-driven and daring team is eager to define the new frontier of mobile robotics. We are always asking hard questions, rapidly iterating, and getting our boots in the field and on-site to figure it out. We won’t give up until we’ve made a tangible and positive impact on the planet.

About this role
Blue River Technology is seeking Field Engineering Technicians to serve as the direct link between its computer vision and robotics products and the farmers and equipment operators who use them. Starting February or March 2027, you'd spend weeks at a time in the field collecting data, running product tests, conducting agronomic trials, and troubleshooting issues with Blue River's next-generation smart agricultural machinery. The work is hands-on and varied—setting up equipment, diagnosing problems, documenting results, and communicating findings back to product and engineering teams to drive both immediate fixes and longer-term improvements.
This is a contract role (6 or 12 months, potentially renewable) based in Ankeny, Iowa, requiring extensive travel and outdoor work in all weather conditions. You'll need a solid agricultural background, experience operating modern farm equipment safely, and comfort with basic software and data systems. The role demands physical stamina—regular lifting over 40 pounds, climbing in and out of machinery, and working in variable conditions. Strong communication skills are essential, as you'll coordinate regularly with growers, dealers, product managers, and engineers. Preferred qualifications include 2+ years supporting precision agriculture systems, a degree or equivalent experience in agriculture or engineering, and familiarity with complex systems combining software, electronics, and mechanics.
The position pays $25–35 per hour depending on experience and background. Blue River provides all tools, equipment, and vehicles, plus reimburses travel expenses. This is a non-benefit, temporary hourly role; visa sponsorship is not available. If you have agricultural expertise, thrive troubleshooting in the field, and are willing to be away from home for extended periods, this offers direct involvement in developing technology that impacts farming operations at scale.
