Description
Who are we?
The Motley Fool is a purpose-driven financial services company on a mission to make the world smarter, happier, and richer. For 30 years we’ve been helping people make better investment decisions through transparency, education, and Foolish fun. We’re a fast-moving, collaborative team that values high-quality work, curiosity, and initiative. We care deeply about what we do, and we’re driven by the impact our work has on real people’s financial futures.
What does this team do?
The Fool is a place where a lot of fun and a lot of work happen quickly. Our Legal team helps us innovate while adhering to the laws and regulations that may affect all of the work and fun we do. We look to our lawyers to help us avoid fiascos, like [redacted] or [also redacted], but we especially want them to help us create great services for our members and the world.
What would you do in this role?
You will serve as the dedicated legal partner to our business colleagues throughout the full product development lifecycle — from ideation to launch and iteration — and help seamlessly integrate legal and compliance considerations into the way we build our products and services (one might say, “by design”).
No two days will look the same, but here’s a glimpse of what you’ll tackle:
- Provide timely, business-grounded guidance on the legal and regulatory implications of new features and product lines offered by our businesses, from AI-powered tools to ETFs to research products.
- Advise on applicable federal and state securities laws and regulations, including the Investment Advisers Act, as they relate to the Company's products and services.
- Draft, review and facilitate the filing of regulatory documents.
- Work with team members and external service providers to develop and implement compliance programs for new initiatives.
- Draft legal disclosures, terms of service, and disclaimers to accompany the Company’s products and services.
- Partner with cross-functional teams on regulatory compliance and implications of new features, including AI-enabled tools and automated financial communications.
- Help identify and manage risk arising from marketing materials, disclosures, and member-facing communications.
- Draft and review agreements relevant to product and operation activities.
- Stay ahead of industry trends, legal risks, and regulatory shifts — and educate internal stakeholders accordingly.
What You’ll Bring
- 8+ years of legal experience with in-house and/or law firm experience (a combination of both is preferred), advising on product development within or adjacent to financial publishing, fintech, InvestTech, or other financial services environments.
- Deep substantive and practical knowledge of investment management law, securities regulation and other applicable rules with emphasis on the Investment Advisers Act.
- Familiarity with consumer financial protection regulations as applied to consumer-facing products and services.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate legal complexity into usable guidance for non-lawyers.
- Direct experience advising on AI-enabled tools, automation systems, or personalization engines in a regulated context.
- Strong business judgment and ability to balance risk mitigation with growth.
- J.D. and active, good standing membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
Below you’ll see a few of our perks, but check out our Careers Site for the complete list:
- Flexible, remote work environment (*see our open states above)
- No “vacation policy” (not to be confused with a “No vacation” policy)
- Generous fully-paid parental leave

About this role
The Motley Fool's Legal team sits at the intersection of innovation and regulation, and this role puts you at the center of that tension. As Associate General Counsel for Regulatory Products, you'd be the primary legal advisor guiding product development across the company's offerings—from AI-powered tools to ETFs to research products. You'd work closely with Product, Operations, Technology, and Compliance teams throughout the full lifecycle of new initiatives, translating regulatory complexity into actionable guidance and helping the company move fast without creating legal exposure.
The work demands deep expertise in securities law, particularly the Investment Advisers Act, combined with practical knowledge of consumer financial protection regulations and emerging areas like AI-enabled automation. You'd draft regulatory filings and disclosures, develop compliance programs for new ventures, review marketing materials and member communications for risk, and stay ahead of industry shifts to educate internal stakeholders. This isn't a role where you sit back and review what others propose—you're expected to be entrepreneurial, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to balance risk mitigation with enabling growth in a fast-moving environment.
You'll need at least eight years of legal experience, ideally split between in-house and law firm work, with substantive background in financial services, fintech, or publishing. Direct experience advising on AI tools or automated systems in regulated contexts is a plus. The position is fully remote but requires residency in one of twenty specified states. The salary range is $260,000–$290,000, with equity, strong health coverage, flexible time off, and parental leave.
