Emhance
Director of Finance
Columbus, OH (or Remote) · Full-Time
About Emhance
Emhance builds emotion AI for mobile game studios. The platform analyzes hundreds of facial signals captured through a player's device camera during gameplay to surface moments of frustration, concentration, and delight, then maps those emotional responses to specific in-game events — revealing why players actually quit in ways that traditional playtesting and surveys can't. Emhance's customers, including game designers, user researchers, marketers, and studio executives, have used these insights to meaningfully improve player retention, ad revenue, and conversion. Emhance works with player-obsessed studios who want to understand their players scientifically, not just anecdotally.
The Role
Emhance is hiring its first Director of Finance to build and own the company's financial function from the ground up. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role: you'll run the day-to-day financial operations of the company — bookkeeping, payroll coordination, accounts payable/receivable, and cash management — while also establishing the systems, tools, and processes that let the company scale as it grows. You'll report directly to company leadership and have full visibility into, and responsibility for, the financial health of the business.
This role suits someone who wants deep ownership over a company's finance function without layers of existing process to navigate — because you're the one building it.
What You'll Do
- Own day-to-day bookkeeping and the monthly close process, ensuring accurate, timely, and audit-ready financial records
- Manage accounts payable and receivable, including vendor payments and customer invoicing
- Coordinate payroll processing and ensure compliance with applicable employment tax and reporting requirements
- Track cash flow and burn rate, giving leadership a clear, current view of runway at all times
- Stand up financial systems and tools appropriate for an early-stage company (accounting software, expense management, basic FP&A infrastructure)
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reporting for company leadership and, as needed, the board
- Coordinate with external accountants, tax preparers, and other outside financial support as needed
- Support ad hoc financial analysis and modeling to inform key business decisions
- Assist with fundraising-related financial preparation, including data room support and financial projections, as needed
- Ensure compliance with relevant tax filings, business registrations, and financial recordkeeping requirements
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in accounting, finance, or financial operations, ideally including time at an early-stage startup
- Comfort operating without an established finance team or extensive existing infrastructure — you'll build much of it yourself
- Strong working knowledge of accounting principles, cash flow management, and financial reporting fundamentals
- Hands-on experience with standard accounting and finance tools (e.g., QuickBooks, payroll platforms such as Gusto or Deel, spreadsheet-based modeling)
- High attention to detail and strong organizational instincts
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders and leadership
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent experience is a plus but not required
What Success Looks Like
- Clean, accurate, up-to-date books and a repeatable monthly close process within the first few months
- Clear, real-time visibility into cash position and runway
- Financial systems and processes built to scale as the company and team grow
- Leadership consistently has the financial information it needs to make timely, informed decisions
About this role
Emhance is building its finance function from scratch and needs someone to own it entirely. As the first Director of Finance, you'll handle everything from day-to-day bookkeeping and payroll coordination to cash management and monthly closes—while simultaneously designing the systems and processes that will support the company as it scales. You'll report directly to leadership with full visibility into the business's financial health, which means your work directly informs major decisions around runway, spending, and growth.
This role demands 5+ years in accounting or financial operations, with startup experience strongly preferred. You need solid grounding in accounting principles, cash flow management, and financial reporting, plus hands-on familiarity with tools like QuickBooks, Gusto, and spreadsheet modeling. The ideal candidate is comfortable building infrastructure rather than inheriting it—someone energized by ownership and the chance to establish processes from the ground up rather than navigate existing bureaucracy.
You'll know you're succeeding when the books are clean and current, leadership has real-time visibility into cash position and runway, and your systems can grow with the company. This suits someone who wants deep operational control over a finance function at a B2B SaaS company working in an emerging space—emotion AI for gaming—without the constraints of established organizational layers.
