About this role
Burgess & Niple is offering an early-career entry point into transportation engineering, working on real projects for state departments of transportation and local municipalities across the Indianapolis office. You'll support experienced engineers and project managers on assignments ranging from rural highway improvements to urban corridors, roundabouts, and larger infrastructure initiatives—gaining practical exposure to geometric design, drainage, pavement work, and the full design-to-delivery cycle.
The work centers on producing transportation plans and engineering deliverables: preparing designs, calculations, reports, cost estimates, and technical drawings using current tools like MicroStation, OpenRoads, and AutoCAD alongside 3D modeling platforms. You'll develop both technical depth and problem-solving skills under direct mentorship, moving from calculation and drawing support toward greater ownership of design work.
You'll need a BS in Civil Engineering or a related ABET-accredited program, plus EIT or Engineer Intern registration (or the ability to obtain it within six months). Solid Microsoft Office skills are essential; experience with design software is valued but not required at hire. The role suits someone genuinely interested in transportation systems, self-directed, adaptable to shifting project needs, and ready to contribute from day one.
