Description
At Vatn Systems, we specialize in designing and manufacturing advanced Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) that push the boundaries of underwater exploration and defense technology. Our AUVs integrate complex electro-mechanical systems, high-precision sensors, and cutting-edge software to operate in challenging marine environments. We’re looking for a skilled CNC operator to join our growing production team and play a key role in transitioning products from R&D to full-scale production.
Role Description:
As a multi-axis CNC Operator at Vatn Systems you will support precision machining operations by running multi-axis CNC equipment and verifying part quality throughout the machining process. This role requires strong attention to detail, disciplined execution of established processes, and the ability to identify issues before they impact part quality. This position supports a rapidly scaling machining operation, where consistency and repeatability are critical to sustaining increasing production rates.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Operate CNC equipment: 5-axis mills, Mill-turn, Lathe
- Execute processes for production and R&D components
- Load/unload parts and manage workholding setups
- Execute established programs and follow setup documentation
- Perform in-process inspection on critical features using manual metrology tools
- Monitor process quality
- Perform hand-finishing: Execute meticulous deburring, edge breaking, and final cleaning of precision machined parts
- Identify and escalate; out-of-tolerance conditions, process instability, drawing ambiguities
- Maintain machine and shop readiness; manage coolant levels, chip management, basic machine maintenance, and keep the general shop floor clean and organized
- Support continuous improvement of shop processes through constructive feedback
Required Qualifications:
- 2–4 years CNC machining or operation experience
- Experience working with tight toleranced hardware
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and basic GD&T
- Strong familiarity with precision measurement tools
- Demonstrated attention to detail and process discipline
- Ability to follow established processes consistently
- Willingness to tackle general shop support tasks, from deburring to floor maintenance
- Willingness to stop production and escalate issues when needed
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with multi-axis machining (4-axis / 5-axis)
- Familiarity with Fanuc CNC controls
- Experience with production environments
- Exposure to in-process probing and or inspection methods
- Basic understanding of tool life management and tool wear pattern
Vatn Systems is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds.
About this role
Vatn Systems manufactures advanced underwater vehicles for exploration and defense, and this CNC operator role sits at a critical juncture: supporting the transition from R&D prototypes into scaled production. You'll operate multi-axis equipment—5-axis mills, mill-turn machines, and lathes—to machine precision components that must perform reliably in demanding marine environments. The work demands consistency and repeatability as production volumes increase, so process discipline and attention to detail aren't optional.
Beyond running machines, you'll verify part quality using manual metrology tools, perform hand-finishing work like deburring and edge breaking, and catch problems before they cascade. You're expected to read mechanical drawings and GD&T, manage workholding setups, maintain machine readiness, and escalate out-of-tolerance conditions or process instability without hesitation. This is hands-on work that includes general shop support—coolant management, chip handling, floor organization—alongside the precision machining itself.
You'll need 2–4 years of CNC experience with tight-tolerance hardware and demonstrated familiarity with precision measurement. Multi-axis machining background, Fanuc control experience, and exposure to in-process probing are valuable but not required. The role suits someone who takes pride in executing established processes reliably and isn't afraid to speak up when something doesn't fit the standard.
