Description

Electric Kiwi has been shaking up the power sector since 2014. Today we’re a proud bunch of innovators disrupting electricity, broadband and mobile. Founded by Kiwis, for Kiwis, we operate some of Aotearoa’s fastest-growing brands, including Electric Kiwi and Kiwi Mobile.

We’re a team of almost 200 peeps and our purpose is simple: we exist to make it better, for our customers, our people and our business!

We’ve got a bold strategy and big ambitions to deliver innovation and a digital-first customer service, with relentless commitment to our customers.

About the role

We’re looking for a Developer Productivity Engineer to help make it better for our engineering teams by improving our developer platform, removing friction, and helping us ship great software faster.

If you love developer tooling, automation, CI/CD, and finding smarter ways to work, this could be a bit of you. You’ll stay hands-on, experiment with AI and new tech, and turn good ideas into improvements our developers actually feel.

Success in this role means faster, more reliable software delivery, better self-service tooling, and measurable improvements in developer experience across our engineering teams.

This role will suit someone with strong experience in platform engineering, DevOps, internal developer platforms, or software engineering enablement, who loves improving how engineers build, test and ship software.

What you’ll bring:

  • Curiosity, courage, and a growth mindset that isn’t limited to what’s been done in the past
  • Respect for others and a collaborative spirit
  • A desire to challenge the status quo and turn ideas into action
  • Excitement about exploring practical uses of AI, LLMs and automation to improve engineering workflows and developer experience

What you’ll do:

  • Help evolve our internal developer platform, with GitLab at the heart of how our engineering teams build and deliver software
  • Find friction in the developer experience and turn it into practical improvements that make it easier and faster for our teams to get things done
  • Improve workflows across the software delivery lifecycle through automation, reliable CI/CD pipelines and self-service tooling
  • Use developer experience and delivery metrics to spot bottlenecks, measure improvements and help teams make better decisions
  • Work alongside engineering teams to understand what’s slowing them down and build solutions that improve velocity, quality and developer experience
  • Share what you learn through documentation, code reviews and training, helping good ideas and better ways of working spread across our teams

The kind of tech you’ll work with

You’ll work with tools and technologies such as GitLab, Python, Terraform, Docker, APIs, JavaScript and data/reporting tools. Experience across all of these isn’t essential - we care more about how you’ve used technology to improve software delivery and developer experience.

We’re a fast-moving (grown-up) startup that thrives on agility.

What you’ll get to explore

You’ll have plenty of opportunity to experiment with AI, LLMs, agentic tools and automation, and explore how they can improve software delivery. You’ll deepen your expertise in developer experience, software delivery optimisation and DORA metrics, with the freedom to test ideas, learn quickly and turn what works into practical improvements for our engineering teams.

How we make it better for you

  • 5 extra days of paid leave
  • Hybrid working
  • Employee Assistance Program through Clearhead
  • A share programme, cause success is sweeter when it’s shared
  • 50% off public transport
  • Office doggos
  • Epic office views

If you’re looking to make it better in a company that makes it better, we want to hear from you.

To be eligible for this role, you must have permanent working rights in NZ.

About this role

Electric Kiwi is looking for someone to be the bridge between their engineering teams and the tools they use every day. In this Developer Productivity Engineer role, you'd focus on removing the friction that slows developers down—whether that's improving CI/CD pipelines, building better self-service tooling, or automating repetitive workflows. You'll work primarily with GitLab, Python, Terraform, and Docker, though the specific tech stack matters less than your track record of using tools to measurably improve how teams ship software.

The role sits at the intersection of platform engineering, DevOps, and developer experience. You'd spend your time understanding what's actually blocking your engineering teams, experimenting with solutions (including AI and automation), and turning what works into lasting improvements. Success looks like faster deployments, fewer bottlenecks, and engineers who feel genuinely enabled by the systems around them. This suits someone who's worked in platform engineering, DevOps, or software enablement before and who gets energized by the problem-solving side of developer tooling rather than just maintaining infrastructure.

You'll be based in their Auckland office, working in-office. Electric Kiwi offers the standard startup perks—share scheme, extra leave, EAP support—plus some genuine ones like 50% off public transport and office dogs. You'll need permanent working rights in New Zealand to apply.
