Description

Overview:

If you're looking for the stability of a profitable, growing company with the entrepreneurial spirit of a startup, we’re hiring. SageSure, a leader in catastrophe-exposed property insurance, is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help design, build, and evolve the software platforms that support our customers, partners, and business operations.

As a senior individual contributor, you will solve complex engineering problems, influence architectural and technical decisions, and help teams deliver scalable, reliable, and maintainable software. You will work closely with engineers, product managers, quality engineers, architects, and other cross-functional partners to enhance existing products and develop new capabilities

This role offers the opportunity to work with modern technologies, contribute across the software development lifecycle, and provide technical leadership within a collaborative engineering organization. We invite you to join our shared commitment to building, shipping, learning, and continuously improving.

What you’d be doing:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable software applications, services, APIs, and platform capabilities.
  • Lead the technical design and implementation of solutions that support complex business requirements, high transaction volumes, and evolving customer needs.
  • Partner with product managers, quality engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to define requirements, evaluate technical approaches, and deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Establish and influence the technical direction of projects and initiatives, including architecture, design patterns, system integrations, and engineering standards.
  • Identify performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability concerns and develop solutions that improve the health of our systems.
  • Deliver software through automated build, testing, deployment, and continuous delivery processes.
  • Ensure code quality through automated testing, code reviews, technical documentation, and adherence to software engineering best practices.
  • Communicate technical plans, architectural decisions, risks, and recommendations clearly to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and coaching to other engineers through pairing, design discussions, and code reviews.
  • Collaborate across engineering teams to solve shared technical challenges, promote consistent practices, and advance broader platform capabilities.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and development tools, including AI-enabled engineering tools, and identify opportunities to improve software delivery and developer effectiveness.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+  years of professional software engineering experience, including experience independently solving complex technical problems and influencing technical direction.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language, such as Java, TypeScript, Go, Python, C#, or a comparable language.
  • Experience designing, developing, integrating, and maintaining APIs, services, distributed systems, or modern software applications.
  • Experience working with databases and applying software design, architecture, testing, and development best practices.
  • Proven ability to provide technical leadership, evaluate tradeoffs, and influence the direction of complex, cross-functional initiatives.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to bring structure and sound technical judgment to ambiguous challenges.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including experience working effectively across remote and geographically dispersed teams.
  • Ability to travel occasionally, up to 15%, based on business needs

Highly preferred candidates also have:

  • Experience designing and maintaining microservices or distributed systems.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, containerization, and orchestration technologies, particularly AWS, Docker, or Kubernetes.
  • Experience with technologies commonly used within SageSure’s software environment, including Java, Spring Boot, and Temporal.
  • Experience using AI-enabled development tools or agentic coding assistants, such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot.
  • Experience in property and casualty insurance, Insurtech, Fintech, or another regulated industry.

About this role

SageSure, a profitable and growing leader in catastrophe-exposed property insurance, is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to take on senior technical leadership within their microservices-based SaaS platform. You'd own complex engineering problems across their API-driven business, working on design, architecture, and implementation of scalable systems that handle high transaction volumes and evolving customer needs. This is a hands-on role where you'd influence technical direction, establish engineering standards, and partner with product managers, architects, and cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, maintainable software.

The position requires at least five years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated ability to solve complex problems independently and shape technical strategy. You'll need strong proficiency in a modern language like Java, TypeScript, Go, or Python, solid experience with APIs and distributed systems, and a track record of providing technical leadership on cross-functional initiatives. Beyond core competencies, experience with microservices, cloud platforms like AWS, containerization, and ideally Java/Spring Boot will strengthen your candidacy—as will familiarity with regulated industries or exposure to AI-enabled development tools.

You'd be based in Chicago in-office, with occasional travel up to 15%. SageSure emphasizes a quality-first, metrics-driven approach to software delivery, continuous integration and deployment, and a collaborative engineering culture. The role offers the chance to work with modern technologies while contributing across the full development lifecycle and mentoring other engineers.
