The Opportunity 

The Manager, Loan and Debt Accounting will oversee the day-to-day accounting activities related to Oportun’s loan portfolio and debt, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies. This role will lead key aspects of the monthly close process, including account reconciliations, financial analysis, and review of loan- and debt-related accounting activities.

You’ll also lead and develop accounting team members, strengthen processes and internal controls, and partner across Finance, Technology, and other teams to improve the scalability, accuracy, and efficiency of Oportun’s accounting operations.

What You'll Do

Your day-to-day

  • You’ll oversee accounting activities for Oportun’s loan portfolio and debt, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately, completely, and in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies.
  • You’ll lead the month-end close process for loan- and debt-related accounts, including journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, flux analysis, and other close activities.
  • You’ll supervise, coach, and develop accounting team members, providing clear priorities, feedback, review, and ongoing support.
  • You’ll strengthen accounting processes and internal controls by identifying opportunities to reduce manual work, improve data quality, streamline workflows, and improve close and reporting efficiency.
  • You’ll use AI-enabled tools and emerging technologies thoughtfully to enhance accounting analysis, documentation, workflows, and operational efficiency while maintaining appropriate review and controls.
  • You’ll partner with Finance, Technology, and other Oportun teams to implement process improvements, automation solutions, and scalable accounting practices supporting loan and debt activities.

What You Bring

Skills & experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 6+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and demonstrated ability to research, interpret, and apply accounting guidance.
  • Experience with loan, lending, debt, or other financial-services-related accounting activities.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, and developing accounting professionals and reviewing the work of others.
  • Experience with internal controls and accounting process improvements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate complex accounting issues, identify root causes, and develop practical solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to partner effectively across Finance and other functions.
  • Willingness to use AI-enabled tools and emerging technologies responsibly to improve accounting analysis, documentation, and processes while maintaining appropriate review and controls.

Nice to Have

  • CPA or progress toward CPA certification.
  • Experience in consumer lending, financial services, fintech, banking, or a related industry.
  • Experience implementing accounting process improvements, workflow automation, or financial-system enhancements.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled accounting, finance, analytics, or productivity tools in a controlled environment.

The US salary range for this full-time position is $91,500 - $146,400.

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects a national minimum and maximum range for new hire salaries for this position.
