About this role

The Equity Project Charter School's Middle School kitchen serves over 1,000 students daily and is looking for an experienced Lead Chef to oversee meal preparation, quality control, and menu development. You'd work Monday through Friday in a leadership role that bridges culinary craft with institutional food service, directing Assistant Chefs and Kitchen Assistants while collaborating with the Executive Chef and Sous Chef on kitchen strategy and operations. This position demands at least three years of professional cooking experience, strong food safety knowledge (NYC Food Protection Certificate preferred), and the ability to maintain high standards across both routine meals and special events.

TEP is a nationally recognized charter school committed to educational equity, and the kitchen role reflects that mission—you'd be supporting student wellness through a healthy food program while working within a supportive, mission-driven environment. The position offers competitive compensation ($66,300–$67,450), comprehensive benefits including four weeks of vacation, health insurance, professional development opportunities, and a staff food program. The role is fully in-person and requires the reliability and attention to detail needed to manage daily operations for a large school community.

This is a fit for a culinary professional who values both operational excellence and working toward a larger purpose, and who thrives in a structured, collaborative kitchen environment rather than a high-volume restaurant setting.
