Description
We are X, bigly labs, Dis-Chem’s high-performance innovation hub; a place where bold ideas meet data, design, and radical customer focus to reimagine what healthcare can be.
Our mission is to power the future of healthcare by lowering costs, unlocking new possibilities, and improving access to healthcare for all South Africans. We do this through cutting-edge digital solutions that deliver smarter, more human, and truly patient-focused experiences. Here, your work is not limited to a whiteboard; it becomes real. It drives decisions, shapes experiences, and moves healthcare forward. We are driven by one big question: How do we use data and today’s technology to build breakthroughs to better health?
There’s only one question left: are you ready to make healthcare smarter, and actually mean it?
To advise, design and manage Data Architectures and their evolution to support strategic insights, decision-making, advanced analytics, and AI initiatives. Data Architect must apply TOGAF and DAMA-DMBOK principles to establish and implement modern and robust data architectures, solutions designs and principles in a well-managed, secure, and fit for purpose approach. This role will provide architectural input into the development of scalable data platforms and enable digital capabilities across the organisation.

About this role
X, bigly labs is Dis-Chem's innovation hub, and this Data Architect role sits at the centre of building the data foundations that will power healthcare transformation across South Africa. You'd be responsible for designing enterprise-wide data architectures using DAMA principles and modern patterns, then guiding their implementation across scalable cloud platforms. This means working hands-on with engineers and data modellers to ensure new platforms support analytics, machine learning, and AI workloads, while also defining how data flows securely and compliantly across the organisation's systems.
The role demands deep technical expertise: you'll need 6+ years in data architecture or enterprise data management, plus certifications in a cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or Databricks) and ideally TOGAF 10 and DAMA-DMBOK. You should be fluent in cloud-native services like Azure Synapse or Snowflake, comfortable with data integration tools, and have real experience designing scalable platforms that handle distributed systems, metadata management, and data governance. Healthcare, retail, or insurance sector experience is valued.
Beyond the technical credentials, you'll spend significant time in collaboration—running architecture reviews, solution design sessions, and workshops to align data strategy with business goals. You'll own architectural decisions, navigate ambiguity, and build consensus across business, IT, and data teams. The position is hybrid based in Sandton, Gauteng, and suits someone who can think strategically about systems while staying grounded in the practical work of making those systems real.
