Description

Who we are

Atoms is building the machines that power the next era of progress.

Over the last decade, software has transformed the digital world. But the physical world, where food is made, minerals are mined, goods are moved, and industries are run, remains far less intelligent, far less efficient, and far more constrained. We’re changing that.

Atoms builds Physical AI — real-world robots for the industries that move civilization forward, starting with food, mining, and transport. Our systems are designed to understand, predict, and control the real world with precision, turning complex physical operations into something more reliable, more scalable, and more productive.

This work requires more than robotics. It requires deep integration across hardware, software, AI, operations, manufacturing, and real estate. We don’t just build machines in a lab. We deploy them into real environments, operate them, learn from them, and improve them until they work at scale.

We are roboticists, engineers, operators, and builders. We believe the next great technology companies will not only transform information, but the physical systems that shape everyday life.

If you want to work on hard problems with real-world impact, join us.

What you’ll do

  • Serve as Atoms' subject-matter expert on technical accounting, providing proactive guidance on complex transactions, acquisitions, new business initiatives, commercial arrangements, and other non-routine activities
  • Lead the research, evaluation, and documentation of accounting conclusions under U.S. GAAP, including the preparation of clear, concise, and defensible technical accounting memoranda
  • Partner with Controllership, Legal, Corporate Development, Strategic Finance, Tax, Treasury, business leaders, and external auditors to assess the accounting implications of strategic and operational decisions
  • Monitor emerging accounting guidance, evaluate its impact on the company, and lead the implementation of new accounting standards and company-wide accounting policies

  • Strong technical writing skills, with the ability to prepare clear, concise, and defensible accounting memoranda and explain complex conclusions to executives, operators, Legal, and external auditors
  • Comfort partnering proactively with Controllership, Finance, Tax, Legal, Corporate Development, and business teams, while maintaining strong technical standards and independence

About this role

Atoms is building physical AI and robotics systems for real-world industries—food, mining, transport—and this role sits at the center of the financial and strategic decisions that shape the company's growth. As Senior Director of Technical Accounting, you'd be the go-to expert on how complex transactions, acquisitions, and business initiatives should be treated under U.S. GAAP, working across Controllership, Legal, Corporate Development, and business leadership to translate intricate accounting matters into actionable guidance for executives and external auditors.

The position demands deep technical expertise paired with business acumen. You'll research and document accounting conclusions, prepare defensible technical memoranda, monitor emerging standards, and establish company-wide policies—work that requires 12+ years of experience, a CPA, and ideally Big 4 background with national office exposure. This isn't a role where you simply apply existing frameworks; you're expected to independently evaluate novel situations, understand the economics of deals and arrangements, and help strengthen technical accounting capabilities across the organization as it scales.

The role is based in San Francisco (with New York and Los Angeles as alternatives) and requires full-time, five-day-a-week in-office presence. Compensation ranges from $260,000 to $340,000 annually, plus equity, performance bonus, and a standard benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and paid time off.
