You'll be a recognized technical voice who works across disciplines to land elegant, well-balanced designs.
This position is hybrid and requires working on-site in our San Jose, CA office three days per week.
Responsibilities
- Own instrument thermal models and drive instrument NRE and per-mission-block design improvements.
- Own the thermal V&V test plan, including model correlation, for instruments.
- Own thermal hardware ICDs (heat straps, radiators) and performance requirements.
- Contribute to full-spacecraft thermal balance and system thermal model integration.
- Support system-level testing and define thermal limits and margins to other subsystems.
- Mentor junior thermal engineers and serve as the technical go-to for instrument thermal.

- B.S. or higher in Mechanical, Aerospace, Physics, or a related field.
Nice-to-have
- Scripting in Python or Matlab.
- Systems-engineering experience.
- Experience with IR-imaging systems or spacecraft payloads.

About this role
Muon Space is seeking a Senior Thermal Engineer to lead instrument thermal design and verification across multiple satellite missions in their LEO constellation business. You would own the full lifecycle of thermal engineering for instruments—from modeling and hardware selection through test correlation and performance validation—while also contributing to spacecraft-level thermal balance and system integration. This role demands both deep technical expertise and cross-disciplinary collaboration to deliver designs that balance performance, cost, and mission requirements.
The position requires at least eight years of aerospace thermal engineering experience, with demonstrated proficiency in thermal simulation, TVAC testing, and the mechanical interfaces that connect thermal design to the rest of the spacecraft. You should be comfortable flowing requirements, managing margins, and mentoring junior engineers. Python or Matlab scripting, systems-engineering background, or payload experience would strengthen your candidacy. The hybrid arrangement is based in San Jose, California, with three days per week on-site.
Muon Space offers a salary of $173,000 to $193,000 plus equity, medical and dental coverage, a 401k plan, three weeks paid vacation for new hires, twelve paid holidays, unlimited sick time, and paid parental leave. Note that this role requires U.S. person status or export authorization eligibility due to ITAR/EAR regulations.
