About this role
ALTEN Technology USA's Robotic R&D Team is looking for a Mechanical Technician who can work independently on the full lifecycle of robotic component design—from translating conceptual ideas into practical hardware to creating detailed CAD models and managing integration with electrical and software systems. You'll need at least five years of mechanical design experience with a strong mechatronics foundation, proficiency in SolidWorks, and hands-on knowledge of actuators, sensors, and control systems. This is a contract position based in San Francisco, requiring five days per week on-site, with a salary range of $110,000–$120,000.
The role suits someone comfortable operating with high autonomy in a fast-paced R&D environment and who can troubleshoot and test mechanical systems as they're developed. While a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering is required, the bonus skills—3D printing, machine shop experience, PLC familiarity, GD&T, basic coding, and soldering—can strengthen your candidacy. You'll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, but much of the work involves independent problem-solving and hands-on implementation of hardware changes that support the research staff's vision.
